Shadowy line on monitor

I have a shadowy horizontal bar that scrolls from top to bottom of my monitor. I checked all my connections and they seem fine. My friend suggested changing the refresh rate for the video, but I don't know in what increments to change it. I'm running an Insignia flat-screen crt type monitor off a Radeon 9550 video card. (Windows XP, also use a secondary monitor - an old ASTVision 4l, but no line there [I don't think]).

To adjust the refresh rate, right click the desktop in a clear space ( no icons ) choose > Properties > Settings > Advanced > Monitor and adjust the refresh rate higher > apply

also do you have alot of electrical equipment near the monitor ( apart from the PC ) speakers etc ... to test if electromanetic distortion is playing a part move the PC and monitor to a larger space with no electrical equipment withing 6ft ( 6ft is not an exact guide but should give enough of a free space ) and see if the scan line continues?

if you have a dual monitor setup, disconect the secondary one to test again for any interfearence.

also when you checked the conections did you actually un-plug them then reseat them? if not do so, hey may look firm but may not be.

And make sure you have it set to "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" using Halo's instructions, as Windows doesn't set this by default.

Slowly jacked the refresh rate up, with each step getting a quivering that went faster & faster, until at 85 (highest) the quiver is barely perceptible, but there. I have my tower directly next to my main monitor which is directly next to my 2ndary, a small speaker on top of the main monitor, and a power strip behind it all - hadn't thought of any of that - don't have much room but I'll see what I can do. As I built the computer desk myself, I was thinking of adding one of them thar fancy tower holders on the side of the desk.

    Thanks, guys!

P.S. - already had the "hide" feature checked.

As Halo originally suggested, it sounds like the speaker is causing it.

If the speaker is not powered or if it's removed, and it's still doing it, then it's not the problem.

I would also try giving the CRT it's own power supply (no powerstrips or double adapters etc). Long shot but worth a try?

You could also see if it does it in Safe Mode or not, and try the deguass button on the monitor.

    Sweeeeet!

Flicker's gone. Degaussing did the trick. Thanks so much, all!

You're welcome. ;) (and apologies to Halo who did all the hard work as usual while I claim the credit)
