When I try to access files on my new computer from my old computer I get a enter account credentials, which includes user name and password.

Much as I hate to admit it ever since Win 10 changed how they do logins on computers I've been lost. I know my wifi SSID and password, how do I find what the information that it is asking for?

My two machines are named lappie and Wendy4.

I believe I have turned sharing on my new to me computer (Wendy4). I even mapped my documents as Drive Z.

    Feeling real stupid right now.

Actually, I have shared the diectories as described. But then I run into this...

    ss 200322.png

so where do I find these bleeping network credentials? Honestly I have no clue.

Have you tried your PC login (if you use one) or your Microsoft email and password (if you have one)?

If none of that then try this. Got to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change advanced sharing setting > under All Networks select Turn off password protected sharing.

If not that then you need to check the credentials and see if you can find or create the credentials there. Right-click the Start button and go to Search and search/open the Credentials Manager. Select Windows Credentials. You can also clear the existing credentials but I do not know if that is a good thing to do or if it will just create a new headache. This is something above my knowledge level. Maybe this will help. How to setup and use Credential Manager on Windows 10

The PC you are connecting to, you need that PCs user name and password. It is easy if you set up both PCs with the same name and password.

I finally got it to work. though I am not sure how. Part of the challenge was moving between the two computers in my wheelchair, w2hich definitely slowed things down. One of the breakthroughs was turning user ID and password authentication off at the host computer. The old user ID and password system made things much simpler, I didn't have half the trouble doing this in Win 7. Then cam the fight with permissions, which was another headache. I still want to share the DVD drive on my lappie with my netbook, I'll fight that battle today. As is, I was up till midnight getting it done.

I just bought a Lexmart color laser printer and used the wireless option, which side stepped sharing the printer completely.

My user name is an email address M$ basically forced on me, as is my 4 digit pin. Like I said, the new ID / password scheme is kicking my a$$.

I really wish MS would not have killed HomeGroup. That was such a simple process.

i give up, the drive i thought I was sharing was a large thumb drive that was a mirror of my files that were backed up. I suspect M$ has some major bugs in this area, as in it doesn't work. While irritating, it isn't a major deal, I'll wait for the fixes and try again.

The thumb drive was being shared by both computers, so in a weird sort of way it works, just not the way I need it to.

Not helpful to your situation but my Wifi router (Netgear N750) has a USB slot for sharing files on the home Wifi network including mobile devices with the Genie app. It can even be used as a USB media share for music and movies including streaming to smart TVs. You can also access & share a USB printer through the Wifi router. So if you are in a position to buy a new Wifi router the better ones have some pretty useful options and they can be found for a good price. I bought mine new for $80 but they can be found on Amazon for $30-$40 used if you are willing to try one used.

I have started a thread on the Microsoft forum, which I don't hold much hope for but I'll post a congruent conversation on this thread.

In response to more conversations with an Indian gentleman whose name I will not even try to pronounce, I have brought both computers to the same admin account info, as well as renaming C:/ to 'LAPPIE' and 'Wendy' respectively. I will gladly provide screenshots upon request. I really want to get this to work, badly. Win 10 is turning out to be a nightmare all around. I also need to disassociate my gmail email from my Win 10 account, but that is a different issue. I am beginning to hate M$. They want to control my entire digital life.

There is no 'serious fault' with Win 10 networking but it does seem as if you are trying to find the right settings by trial and error. If you google home networking in Win 10 there are many step by step guides available and you should try to find one you feel you can work through. I could help you get it set up but cannot commit the time it would probably need given your lack of familiarity with 10.

by chance did you mean work group? I changed the name to HOUSENET, that is the name I've used since Win 98. I'll try Googling it your way.

HomeGroup has been removed from Windows 10 (Version 1803).
After you install the update, you won’t be able to share files and printers using HomeGroup. So you can forget about HOUSENET, it isn't useful in Windows 10. What worked before doesn't work after update 1803 and later.

I a using the fact I an share a thumb drive on my new computers USB hub as a work around. Definitely a Kludge, but workable for now. I suspect one or both of my OSes are damaged. I read somewhere it is possible to return a computer to it defaults without loosing my files. Worst comes to worst their is always the blank and reinstall option. As I have said, the printer is not a problem as it is a network printer. I am dreading when I need a toner cartridge, Lexmart C322dx cartridge prices are unbelievable. One problem at a time.

Does anyone find it odd that the thumb drive shares just fine, while neither computer will let me share its C:/ ? Now on to more fun things, I have obsessed on this long enough.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll definitely get around to reading those docs

If you really have the Documents folder on your older computer mapped on your newer computer as Z then that's all you need filesharingwise. If there are files/folders in other places on your older computer that you want access to in Wendy4 just move them to a subfolder of Documents and they will be available in Z. It would be good to hear that that is the current situation, though somehow I rather doubt it. For instance file sharing needs to be enabled in your older computer, not in Wendy4.

Re-reading #1 it may be that you need the reverse of this situation - you want to access files on Wendy4 from your old computer. If that's so then Z should already be showing them.

FTP is irrelevant to home networking. Simple file sharing is all the OP needs.

I've red through that link quite carefully, so far nothing works except the Thumb Drive. I've placed a 128Gig TD and named it TRANSFER.

The humorous part is my new computer WENDY has 3.0 USB and the old computer LAPPIE 1.0 . So using the network to transfer data actually speeds up thing quite a bit. My Personal files exceed 100 Gb.

I'll keep plugging at it, I'll gladly do screenshots on request so new eyes can look at my choices. I figured out early to turn password protection off. Everyone is not a constant sharing option, which can be confusing. Given I have nothing going on, I'll just keep plugging away.

  23. Earthling

    Earthling Interplanetary Geek

That is by design. Your Windows OS would be wide open otherwise. Why are you even trying to share C: ? You just need to share the folders containing your personal files, Docs, Pics etc.
Oooh, I get the message

Scroll down to Option 1 here. It details conditions that must apply on each computer, particularly the need to be running SMB1. That is disabled by default in Win 10 and is very likely the reason network file sharing is not working for you yet.

  25. ItsWendy

    ItsWendy MajorGeek

So where is SMB Direct? when I type it in the desktop search bar it brings up a bunch of web pages in a browser that is not mine. Be back in a bit, while I go ith the flow.

  26. Earthling

    Earthling Interplanetary Geek

Have you read the linked guide? SMB Direct and SMB1 are dealt with in detail.

  27. ItsWendy

    ItsWendy MajorGeek

Frustrating. I thought we had it. I tried selecting both SMB Direct and SMB 1.0 separately. No go.

For others reading this thread I found it by pulling up the system command line with <windows key>+R, then entering 'optionalfeatures.exe' and there it was! But 4 hours later I was back at square one. I went through Option 1, it was pretty much what I had already done other than the folder options. Darn it.

  28. ItsWendy

    ItsWendy MajorGeek

I haven't given up, but the older computer does not miss an opportunity to show me how old and slow it is. Wonder if that is contributing to the problem somehow.

    What does SMB stand for?

The workgroup needs the default name WORKGROUP. Using HOUSENET may be the reason it isn't working. This is covered in the guide I suggested you use.

In the pic immediately above 'Did I miss anything' are you able to access the 'Transfer' shares in the top row? I'm guessing that they are pointing at your personal folders on WENDY, or am I misunderstanding? I'm also guesiing the \\WENDY\Wendy share that you cannot access is the C drive on WENDY. As I have said previously you cannot share the C drive by design. Please be very explicit when answering.

Neither computer will allow me to share a local drive, I find the shared thumb drive puzzling but useful. Given that thumb drives have a limited lifespan, I foresee a USB external drive in my future. ATM Lappie is both a clone and a working backup of Wendy. Sure wish I (or someone) could figure this file sharing problem out. I would show Lappie's network setups but they are identical. The no access message is different on Wendy, odd.

After this I could use some help removing the network links I don't want.

Transfer is the link name I finally settled on. It works.

Here is what the error message looks like from the Wendy side.

    None of the passwords work.

  40. Earthling

    Earthling Interplanetary Geek

What does this mean? It works with a USB drive or it works when viewed through File Explorer in LAPPIE? I asked you a simple straightforward question and get a load of unrelated waffle and no clear answer. You didn't confirm what the Transfer shares are pointing at either. It's impossible to resolve detailed problemss such as this without clear and complete answers.

  41. ItsWendy

    ItsWendy MajorGeek

The Thumb Drive drive is just a removable TD (128 Gig) I keep in Wendy, but after being set up as a shared drive named Transfer It is usable and visible from Lappie. I tried to do a massive transfer to Lappie (my docs, 65 Gig of files) but after the 3rd time The data transfer died midstream I carried the TD over to Lappie and downloaded it directly on Lappies USB Hub. I use it for smaller sub directories with good results.

I currently use nothing but short cuts on my desktop to make backing up the computer much easier. I can be cumbersome, but I've had good results with it with the catastrophic failures I've been having lately. 2 computers in as many months.

I use notes to shore up my bad memory from the stroke. My OCD backup system has worked so far. Knock on wood (my forehead).

Lappie is a pure stop gap to keep that computer station working. By rights it should have died long ago, and yet it persists in working. Eventually it will be replaced. But I can use it to good effect until then. This networking issue is a pure learning opportunity I obviously needed.

What you are saying Wendy is that network file sharing is already working, enabling you to transfer stuff from WENDY to LAPPIE without a thumb drive. You could also map WENDY's Transfer folder on LAPPIE as a shared network drive and access it on LAPPIE with a drive file letter. I am just puzzled now by why you still seem to think it isn't working.

  43. ItsWendy

Nope, only the thumb drive works as a shared drive. I can see the directories from the other computer(s), I just can't connect to them. Wendy is my new computer, as well as the name I used for Wendy's Drive C:/

I would like to link from either machine. So both have drives I am attempting to share.

I'll be a female dog if if didn't work this time. I suspect SMB fixed it, but since I hadn't tried sharing my Docs Folder after tweaking SMB I had not noticed. What does SMB stand or anyhow?
