Way back in post #15, I posted that things are different in Windows 10. MS removed what worked in 7 - so forget about trying to compare or do things the way you used to do them in 7. It simply doesn't work.
You have to learn the new method. Yes, it is more complicated but isn't that what MS does? Removes things that work and replaces them with something else so you have to learn something new.

Or they change a program but call it by the same name. example Windows Defender in Win 7 is not the Windows Defender in Win 8/8.1 and 10.
MS Security Essentials that can be installed on Win 7 = Windows Defender that comes already installed in 8/8.1 and 10!

OK so how do I remove unwanted links? Reinstalling the OS is a bit drastic, like cutting off your big toe to remove a hangnail.

I did my first partial backup using the shared files technique today. Very cool. Still have lots to learn, and plenty of time to learn it. My Wi-Fi transfer rate is typically 2.5 Mb/sec, occasionally jumping up past 5Mb/sec. When did we start tossing Gb around like they were Kb ( 8bit user OF)?

I wonder if SMB Direct would replace SMB 1.0 if both computers have it? I'm not so curious as to mess with a working setup.

Why don't you read about SMB?

Actually I have. The stroke left me pretty disabled in the memory dept. I also have some mental deficit, slowed thinking speed, and it affected my eyes somewhat, and of course, left side paralysis. For some reason picking options from a list is particularly vexing. But I survived, and while learning is more dificult than it used to be, I can learn. Sometimes it takes repetition I use notepad to take notes whenever I'm dealing with various bureaucracies in health care, transportation and internet providers.

I was talking to my FIOS provider who wanted me to push a button on my box that was totally inaccessible to me, "look, I'm a disabled woman who has nothing better to do than to call you each and every day and ask, How is my ticket coming?" I actually wore them down, lived without internet for a week too, so I was not a happy camper. My room mate, who is a bit of a tech Luddite didn't understand why I was so bothered, she dismissed it as an addiction.

Remember how you created the shares? Go in the same way and unshare them.

As I was sure of, file sharing was actually working when you said in #45 that it wasn't.

What can I say? Thank you, and sorry. My old lappie is still refusing to share its drives. Since it is a backup anyhow I am reinstalling win 10 on it.

Laudable aim imo, and the way we work here. We hve a decent tower PC on which all the main softwares we use are installed and which is home to all the data files regardless of who uses them or which software or computer created them. There are two laptops, one for each of us, and they both have the same softwares installed but are configured to use the user files on the main PC. No user files are stored on either laptop, all read, write and save operations are effected on the files on the main PC using network file sharing. The main PC is rigorously backed up, both system and data.

None of this would be possible without a reliable network file sharing system which Win 10 provides and it enables either of us to work seamlessly on shared data.

I kind of figured Lappie was a stop gap when my desktop died. But it fills a need. Silly as it may sound I have some affection for the old workhorse. It has many CPU cycles left in it yet. I also has the largest hard drive ATM. A temporary state of affairs. this sheltering in place has me a little wonky.

Dell Latitudes laptops have a generic problem where odd OSes such as Linux don't display mouse pointer on remote monitors, I tried to play open source Red Alert and it also bombed. Wonder if it was rewritten in Linux?

My next destop will be as physically small as I can get, being physically challenged as I am makes that a priority.

After 4 hours of intermittent (have I mentioned how slow this computer is?) attention, no joy. But I can initiate the transfer from Lappie so no big deal. As is, I plan on a once a month backup schedule
