Shift key doing strange things

I had I guy call me yesterday with an unusual problem. When he attempts to capitalize a letter by pressing the shift key and the letter, it puts in a lowercase q next to the letter. This happens when he is using Word or even doing a Google search. It happens every time. He is using XP home. Only been doing it one day. Attempted system restore because I couldnt think of anything else. That didnt work. Any ideas?

 

lowercase q next to anything he hits shift with? i know this is gonna sound dumb but i gotta ask: is the keyboard clean? sounds like a gunked up keyboard that either needs good cleaning or replacing. otherwise, unless he messed with his shortkeys, i have no idea lol

 

Keyboard huh? Thats not a bad thought. I was thinking software and maybe it is hardware. I will bring him a different keyboard and see what happens. If the old one is that dirty, I dont think I want to touch it. Thanks. I'll let you know what happens.

 

I've heard of people who have washed they keyboards in a dishwasher, of course letting it dry for a week. Haven't tried this myself though, just passing along what I've been told.:wave:wave

dishwasher?!?! really?!?! neat! i gotta try that. i just recently disassembled a blackberry 8310 to clean the mud out of it, that was fun too. last keyboard i saw that was bad off and the owner flat refused to replace it got the air compressor taken to it. gobs and gobs of cat hair came out. i was surprised the thing hadn't caused a fire and burned his house down.
