Should I grant it access?

  1. I'll keep this short and sweet.
When I downloaded Kerio firewall a long time ago, I had Rpcss trying to access the net, found it strange so I checked with MG and was told it's not a big deal so I blocked it. But now I came across this quote:
Rpcss.exe is an executable of Microsoft Windows Operating System. It is responsible for Remote Procedure Call services on the local machine. These are public services available to the local network. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.
Uncle Bill at Microsoft. Anyways, should I grant it access or not? I'm running win98, without any problems except for the occasional glitch.

  2. Thanks Star17,
I don't have any of these on my puter. These appear to be business progs. I don't use my pc for work.

I just remembered one thing though, the reason I even found out that Rpcss existed was because after I installed Kerio I did a port scan (GRC) and I kept failing cause one of my ports showed an opening. Once I blocked Rpcss.exe from accessing the net I got a clean bill of health.

Still, I wonder if it's a big deal blocking it.

RPC, Remote Procedure Call, is a system available so that programs can communicate with each other through a network.

rpcss.exe provides RPC capabilities to Windows.

On it's own it's innocent in nature, but it can provide a gateway for Trojans. That can be true though of many Windows files.

It's completely safe for valid programs to use, as it's designed, and shouldn't be removed.

In most cases, Windows File protection will probably replace it as it's deemed vital to the operating system.

Basically, it should be left alone, and provided you have other security in place, you won't have any problems.

Blocking it may or may not have any affect, depending on your configuration, installed programs, and requirements.
