Shutdown "Start U U" doesn't work in XP

This is one for a true Geek!

I'm using XP Pro. Until a few days ago, whenever I shut down Windows, I would just hit the Start key then type UU and Windows would shut down. But starting a few days ago (I think it was when there was a Windows update), whenever I hit the Start key then type one U, I get a dropdown menu (Start | Restart | Shutdown). I do NOT want this dropdown menu to appear!!

I want to just type "Start UU" and shut down that way.

Does anyone know how I can get my computer back to work with "Start UU" to shut down?

I'd be most grateful for any leads. Thanks in advance!

You can use that meanwhile, it's a few clicks/keystrokes shorter :-o

 

1. Open the control panel
2. if you are in the catagory view select user accounts if in icon view double click on user accounts
3. Under pick a task select - Change the way users log on or off...
4. Check "Use the welcome screen"

This should fix your problem

That's fabulous. I made a shortcut for both Shutdown and Restart. It feels like I beat the system by only having to use two clicks. Thanks!

It seems so simple now that you've explained it, but until now, no one I asked (including a computer technician) could figure it out. I wonder why it changed over to the other shutdown procedure? Oh well, if it happens again, I can change it back again.

I do a lot of typing on the keyboard and often prefer to use the keyboard rather than a mouse. Thanks for finding the solution.
