Sick Computer

Howdy. Thanks in advance for the help and advice.

My wife's computer is having issues. She is running Windows XP. I found out that she didn't have an antivirus client loaded so I went to download AVAST 4.8 from the author site. It would download so far and get stuck. I then transferred the setup file from my computer to hers via a jump drive, loaded the software and ran a scan. It came up with a virus, I unfortunately don't remember what. I attepted to put the virus into the chest after which I was asked to reboot.

I did that and now all that will come up is the desktop and cursor. The taskbar and all the icons are gone.

How would I go about running the "Read Me First"? What should I do??

My wife decided to take her computer to the Geek squad at Best Buy. They are going to perform a diagnostic and then let us know what they find. Thanks for the help. I would have liked to try what you suggested, but it is now out of my hands.
