"Do not buy an Acer computer. They make amazing computers but their customer service techs are " + text.Bold("all idiots") + ". I've been getting a BSOD if I'm on for more than 2 hours. I'll be doing nothing, just IMing or something, then I'll get the /"Found New Hardware/" balloon on the taskbar. It will say that it found my webcam, my INTEGRATED webcam. Then I'll get a half second BSOD, followed by a reboot. So I called Acer Tech Support. 15 minutes on hold. 10 minutes of asking my info. Me: My first name is Zack. Her: Ok, that's Z as in zeebra, a as in apple, c as in cat, k as in kite. Of course, my email address that i give her has to be like 20 letters long:(. So then, she says "Unplug the ac adapter and remove your battery. Now, hold down your power button for 30 seconds." I was like alright, so i did it and then she said "now boot it up and then... NOW QUICK rapidly press f8" i press it ONCE like i need to, and then she said go to last known good configuration. I did it and then I said, oh well /"I already did, but it didnt work./" then she said /"well, i dont know how else to help you. Please try calling someone else for help/" "

Yeah some of the tech support for companies out there is terrible. I know that i have had to phone lenovo about a bad hard drive and a bad psu and it was like you were talking to a computer. Dont these companies ussually have second teir support that you could have talked to?

Keep calm and keep plugging away, if not for your current problem, for someone who has the same problem later.

Example: 2 years ago, I setup 2 identical laptops (from a different company) for company directors who were moving abroad; I opened the boxes, cleaned the crap off them, updated and setup security, connected them to the LAN, installed the neccessary programs, migrated the users files over and then tested - one wireless card was U/S, no errors in Device Mangler or logs, just didn't work - switched the wireless mini-PCI in from the other laptop, worked fine. My conclusion = needs a new wireless card.

'Phoned support, spoke to 2 different techs, one took over the laptop to go through the settings, agreed eventually that it was indeed faulty and the laptop would need to be returned and replaced. This was not an option for my clients - the laptop minus the HDD, ok - but no, Support was insistent that it had to be returned intact, regardless of any confidential material that it may now contain.

I stuck to my guns and they eventually agreed to send a replacement wireless card via courier the following morning - success? Yes.

The website now gives an option, for a small additional fee, of retaining the HDD if the machine has to be returned - that's a success for everyone concerned with data security.

Just keep calm and eventually you will find someone in Support with enough knowledge to get your problem sorted (but in this case, your peers are much more likely to give you a fast fix ^_^).

Have you checked for an overheating problem?

Its propped up, so the bottom isnt touching the ground.

Just having it propped up doesn't mean jack with laptops. Mine overheats at least twice a day when in use. This happens whether I'm in my non-air conditioned house or a room air conditioned to 65F. If it's an overheating problem you'll need to buy a cooling pad for it. I know how much that sucks...notice I did not use the past tense regarding mine.

If it was a desktop, I would suggest a new application of thermal paste.Don't know much about laptops.
    May still be an option.

First things first: Turn of the auto-reboot when the BSoD comes up. That way it will stay up so you can see the error that caused it, and that will help. It's in the "Startup and Recovery" part of your system preferences somewhere.

Once you have the stop error, make a thread in the appropriate forum and we'll get you fixed up. **** Acer's tech support. You should have known better than to go to anyone other than MGs for help. ;)

That was my point. I don't either, which is why my laptop overheats constantly. ;)

  14. Thats your aspire one?!?!? I've had *touch wood* no issues with mine!
If you check the event logs what does it come up with?

Sorry you had a bad experience, z.

But as Mimsy said, find your error message and post in the appropriate forum. The lounge isn't the place for tech support.

If you want to continue your rant, go right ahead. ;) But if the tech help or diagnosis continues, I'll have to move the thread.

  16. I think is more about the rant really :)

I just found out that Packard Bell is part of acer. My first computer was a Packard Bell, my dad bought it at a garage sale for $50. 66 mhz processer, 24mb ram, 1gb hdd. good times. When I was 5 i upgraded it :) my cousin helped me, but I specificlly remember taking the ram out and putting in the new one :)
