Being on the "Major Geeks" website, I'm sure everyone here is well aware of the release of the "Rise of the Silver Surfer" sequel to the Fantastic Four. However, were you aware that 20th Century Fox and Franklin Mint have teamed together to create the "Rise of the Silver Surfer" quarter? Feel free to type in "Silver Surfer Quarter" into google and see how many results you get. This is huge, 40,000 illegally printed quarters on the 2005 California edition mint quarter now have a quaint little movie advertisement on the back of them. And this is no shabby sticker, this is a quality print.

So why spend all the time and money on putting their website name and picture on the back of 40,000 US Coins, and risk paying fines for defacing American currency?? Well, I'm going to go see the movie now. I had no plans to see the Silver Surfer until yesterday when I was closing up at work and while counting out the quarters I noticed one had something stuck to the back of it. Thinking that it was something like mold, which happens on a lot of coins, I simply tossed it back into its change tray with all of the other quarters that I’d already counted. After counting all the quarters I moved onto the dimes, but when I went to pick up the pile of dimes from the drawer, I realized that the quarter didn't have any mold on it at all; it was in fact some kind of design. I picked it up and after realizing what it was I decided to investigate online, why? Well, now I know the answer, and so do you. Thankfully, I kept the quarter in my pocket and left it on my bed side table last night.

Since you know what it looks like now, yeah, seems interesting... whatever, right? Wrong. These single quarters are selling on eBay for $100.00 + right now. I can only imagine what they'll be worth soon.

Interesting, I wonder if they realize they are breaking the law?

You cannot legally deface money, or use it as an advertising medium.

I'm sure that they are aware. But imagine how many more people will go see the movie now... maybe 40,000 more?

I'd laugh if they were ordered to turn over a certain % of the movie profits due to them breaking the law :D

The government knows they did it, knowing full well that it would be against the law. Isnt that a felony, btw?

hahaha... Yeah, something like... 1 quarter the profits? haha, 25%... that would be a good amount of money to the gov't.

Wow...crazy they are selling for that much. How were they first distributed?

The big question is, will they increase or decrease in value as far as what you can get. Sometimes with stuff like that, when the hype dies, so does the amount people are willing to pay for it.

The fact that they are illegal will increase their value. Maybe the government will say they are 'OK', and hence hurt their value :D

I think that if anything, the fact that they are illegal will only increase their value. (or atleast I hope)

I dont think any film company would be daft to do that without getting someones permission first. Have you read in the news that they have had no permission to do this?

EDIT. I will eat those words! Ive just googled it :( Sorry :( Cant beleive theyre are dumbasses like that ou ther in big industry, ive known it illegal to deface money since I was like 12!

You're probably right. Still crazy that people are paying that much for a friggin quarter...illegal or not. Good for you though Ian.;)

::snort:: That would require common sense and business sense in the the US government. :D

haha, good point. The only reason that I can see them stopping th auctions is because they don't want to deal with all the "fake" SS quarters. Although, I've never seen eBay stop bidding on things because it was too much of a hassel for THEM (Except for maybe preventing gamers from selling their characters?). In either case, you're probably right Rikky, they'll likely be fakes. Thankfully the mint that produced them made such a good print you would need some darn good equipment to reproduce it. Here's an UP CLOSE image of it.

(There are a couple of small "scuffs" in the print that you can see the metal through)

Assuming that they will increase in value because of the legal issues... I wonder if they'll quicky decline in value when the movie is released!?
