If you go to a website and it prompts you to download and install it then yes it would be useful to you. If you've never been asked to download it then you won't be missing anything. It's the same type of thing as Java or Flash, some websites use those, others don't.

I've had Firefox just last year to ask for the Silverlight plugin, using Windows 7 Pro x64, so it may still be needed. Normally I install it anyway, but not from MS Update, File Hippo has a newer version than they do. I save it to a Flash drive to save time when updating.

    So you remember what site?
My 64bit Win 7 FF does not have Silverlight.

    Thank you all.
I do have a download pending but have not yet installed it. I could hide it but I used it before this and perhaps because it is asking me to download I am better off doing just that. Win 8 has been a great learning experience and a lot of work with 2 pcs to do. It does lead me to Googling, Binging and asking questions as it is not all intuitive.
    Thanks again.

Correction: I do have a Silverlight plugin 4.1.10329.0 on my Windows 7 64 bit computer.
I have never streamed Netflix on this so I did not realize it was on the netbook.

Truthfully, it probably came with Windows 7 but I'm not 100% positive on that.
    I'll do some looking around.

I know I had it on these 64 bit pcs when I had win 7. I have the same pcs and MS said Silverlight is waiting for download on Win 8 again.
I installed it and did not notice any difference, so far.

I'm wondering what HTML5 will do to Silverlight and Flash. I'm in a in a trial for HTML5 video on YouTube and it seems to work fine.

I'll be glad when HTML5 replaces it all. Silverlight, Flash & Java. Silverlight updates infrequently, but Flash & Java does often.

Honestly, when I didn't have Silverlight, there were only a couple of sites that asked for the plugin, this was on Firefox, one of the sites was a Microsoft one, a short video in regards to some feature. I can't recall the other site.

I may just remove it & see what happens. The worst thing is that I "may" need it again, & I keep it on a Flash drive, along with the current Flash & Java. I've had a lot of sites that requires Flash, & a few needs Java. Keeping these updated is critical to security, & it's important to remove older versions of Java before installing the new one.

It's late, I'll get Silverlight off my computers in the morning & see what happens.

Thanks for bringing this topic up. The less plugins needed (or installed), the better.

EDIT: I did just remove Silverlight from Windows 8 x64, checked MS Update, sure enough, it showed as an optional update, as it always has. Unless something that I really need to see requires it, I'll leave it off.

Disable Java. There is a new exploit out affecting even the latest v7 update 10 from Dec. 2012. I just disabled it last night in IE and FF on the one computer out of 7 I have it installed on. If anything complains it needs Java, we'll use the one computer that has it installed.
