My previous post disappeared before I posted it, so let me try this again. I'm not sure if my computer is fixed or not. I started getting these creepy random audio files that would play on my laptop even when my browser wasn't open. I'm no Einstein, but even I know that's never a good thing. I ran a malware removal tool from Microsoft and it showed Sirefef and Alureon. The tool couldn't remove all of them and I don't know how to deal with those kinds of viruses (I'm a nurse- viruses are easier where I come from), so I did a system restore but all kinds of other weird things started happening. I couldn't log in. I got a message "Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service" so I went in with safe mode to cmd.exe and tried "netsh winsock reset" but I got the response "access is denied". At that point, I came to my senses and arrived here and went through all the steps of malware removal. After disabling the UAC and rebooting, I could no longer access the internet so I went back into safe mode w/ networking and finished it. The scans found many things but the computer is working ok, I think. I did not remove anything and I will attach the logs here.

Double-click RogueKiller.exe to run. (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
When it opens, press the Scan button
Now click the Files/folders tab and locate these detections:

    • [ZeroAccess][FOLDER] U : C:\Windows\Installer\{e82f9450-296c-c67b-4b55-b9c9491facb5}\U --> FOUND

Place a checkmark each of these items, leave the others unchecked.
    Now press the Delete button.
When it is finished, there will be a log on your desktop called: RKreport[2].txt
Attach RKreport[2].txt to your next message. (How to attach)
Do not reboot your computer yet.

Now rerun Hitman and have it remove all that it found.

Reboot and rescan with both RogueKiller and Hitman and attach those new logs as well.

Be sure to tell me how things are running.

I may be too stupid to actually own a computer :( I tried to follow your directions by going to the files tab. There were no checkboxes there so I just highlighted the 4 items and hit delete. I did not go to the main screen and uncheck everything. I actually thought it was only going to delete the things on the tab I was currently on. Once I saw my error, I tried to cancel the delete but it had already removed everything. How much damage have I done?

That looks good. What issues are you still having, if any?

Well, my firewall would no longer work and I could no longer update Windows so I found a program on this site, Tweaking... and it fixed me right up. You, Sir, have been a big help and I thank you.

    You are most welcome.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. Go back to step 4 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link

Malware removal from a National Chain = $149
Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0
