I am running MS XP, SP2 Pent CPU 3.0 GHz,2.99 GHz, 1.00GB Ram, Sigma Tel Audo driver 5.10.0.4568. Whenever i watch an avi movie file, the audio starts skipping always 30-40 minutes into the movie. It's always fine at the beginning but starts skipping well into the movie. This happens when I'm running WMP ver. 11.05721.5145 or RealPlayer. I tried System restore - didn't work. When I tried 'diagnostic start up". I got no audio at all. Sorry, I just have basic knowledge here, and I can't figure out if this is a sound card issue. I tried to update my audio driver in device manager and it said it was up to date. I'm stumped! Anyone have any ideas as to what is causing this? Thanks!

Hmmm... try a different media player; many good free ones are available in the MultiMedia downloads here at MajorGeeks. You could also try a codec pack (also in the MultiMedia section). But it seems to me that it may be a memory issue: for some reason the RAM is 'clogging up', lowering the amount of free RAM to process the .avi files. While the .avi is playing, hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and look under the Processes for anything using up resources. You might want to grab a RAM optimizer/freeing utility from the Memory downloads section. I like FreeRAM XP. When the audio starts skipping, run FreeRAM to free up some memory. If the audio goes back to normal, then we know that something is eating up your memory. If the audio stays messed up, then we're kind of back to step one..... Anyway, install a codec pack first then install a different media player (DivX is great!); if that doesn't do it, go with the memory suggestion... let us know what happens!

    Hi,
Itried the "free ram" and "black viper", (when I opened the black viper rar file I got a bunch of registry files - is that what's suppose to happen?) Anyway movies still skip/choppy after about 37 minutes of playing regardless of media player including divx. Free ram showing 70% free ram. Do you still think it's a memory issue?

It seems to me that something is using up resources and then not 'releasing' them back to the PC. A virus/malware scan may be a good idea. Also a safe re-install of Windows may not be a bad idea either. Also, visit the Memory downloads here at Major Geeks and pick a RAM diagnostic and let it run for at least 2 hours. I like this one: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Microsoft_Windows_Memory_Diagnostic_d3955.html It will create a bootable floppy disk or an .iso file to burn to create a bootable CD. When your run it, press 'T' for the extended tests and let run for at least 3 or 4 passes....
