Slave/Master "atapi incompatible" problems

Installed new cd-r/rw on a global mb running winxpw/sp2. Have the IDE1cable running from MB to HD to zip
IDE2 cable running from MB to Slave cd-r/rw to my old cd (at the end connector).
Floppy (marked on the MB) to floppy drive on the end of the cable.
Getting message on start up "secondary slave atapi incompatible press F1 to resume. All drives are working, any suggestions would be appreciated.

It is possible that the CD/RW does not like being the slave. I have seen a few CD/RW drives that need to hooked up as the master on the IDE channel.

 

are your jumpers set correctly?

 

Thanks, the jumpers are set correctly, however, I'll try to set the CD-R/RW as master. Do I need to have it at the end of the cable or is it ok like it is
MB-CD-R/RW-CD?

yes at the end of the cable ... might try setting it up as a single drive just for trouble shooting purposes

 

After changing the jumpers, master on cd-r/rw connected at the end of the cable and slave old cd rom connected at middle connector, I still get the "atapi incompatable press F1 to resume". Any suggestions to get rid of this would be appreciated. Both devices are working.

try going into the BIOS and setting the fail safe defaults ... sounds like a wrong BIOS setting ... failing that reset the CMOS via the jumper, your motherboards manuel should tell you how to do that
