Slight Internet Connection Problems & Others

Using XP my internet connection has a slight, strange problem. When going to web pages, using anything from Firefox, Chrome, IE there is a 15 second wait/delay before the page loads. But strangely the internet speed, like for downloading is fast as it should be. What could be causing the delay?

Not running Norton or anything in the background...

What may have caused this issue was me trying to correct another issue, that first issue being unable to change/renew my IP like I once did flawless and effortlessly with that popular, easy method floating around the internet.

I saved the page and did some of the steps it said and can paste the steps here if that would help in undoing this.

(Another weird problem I have discovered recently is in the Task Manager, in the Processes tab and in the User Name section everything is now blank and does not have my user name in it anymore, why is that?)
    :-o

Wow. This could take a while, the possibilities are endless.

Let me go backwords with the username. I have not used XP in years but under Control Panle should be "user accounts". See if your name shows up correctly there, otherwise you can change the name of the default account to yours.

As for the internet, a long delay like that sounds like a proxy is running but since you say nothing is running then I will assume that to be true. As this appears to be happening on ALL browsers we need to look for a root cause with your computer.

Lets look at some default possibilities. Try this in order:

1: If you have both wireless and wired adapters and only use one, disable the other.
2: Windows 7 networking is finally pretty solid but XP could benefit from some tweaks. Try this: http://majorgeeks.com/SpeedGuide.net_TCP_Optimizer_d2104.html
3: Update your network card drivers.
4: Reset your router if you have one. Pull the power cord. Go back to your computer.
5: Shut down your computer (or restart if you do not have a router and have not restarted after applying the tweaks from step 2 and updating drivers) If you have your router off shut down the PC.
6: 3 to 5 minutes should have gone by so plug the router back in.
7: Turn the computer back on.

That should keep you busy for a bit.

  3. I will start by with the User Name thing, which is so weird, yes it is there in the User Accounts and it is there when I click START right in the Start Menu upper left hand corner but just not in the Task Manager, so weird. I have done malware scans and removed a few things that were there. I was mildly infected I believe. I have taken care of this issue so far. Now, I do not have wireless, do not use a router and have restarted. I can tell you what I did when I went looking for a method on how to change/renew my IP successfully like I used to be able to until for some strange reason it just stopped working, no idea why.

No need to renew your IP. You should have a cable modem, shut that off in same way but again you need the drivers and you need to try to apply the tweaks with the program mentioned then see how it works.

  5. I got the program but am not sure what I should do with it? What tweaks am I supposed to apply? Also, why would I need drivers if they were fine before? I do not think anything changed in that aspect. Being a Desktop with a cable modem, no wireless and no router do I have a NIC?

  6. This here:

    STEP 3:
    *********
You can try resetting TCP/IP with the netsh command or try the netsh dump (commonly
called by me the netBS commands)

    Reset TCP/IP in Windows XP
    ****************************************

    1. Click on Start and go to Run

    2. In the run box type "cmd" or "command"

    3. At the command prompt type in "netsh int ip reset reset.txt" and hit enter

You'll see the cursor go down a line for a second or two and then it will go back
    to the command prompt.

How to do do netsh dump:
    *******************************
    Netsh dump

This is another IP fix at that I consider sub-par. It sure doesn't fix the reg keys
and that's what matters some times.

    1. click on start and go to run

    2. type in the run box "cmd" or "command" and click OK

    3. At the command prompt type in "netsh dump" and hit enter

A bunch of stuff is going to flash across the screen and you will end up back at
    the command prompt.

    4. Exit out of the command prompt and reboot.

May have been the culprit to my problem but I am not really sure. I THINK after I did that it caused my (I think it might be a 20 second delay/wait before a web page will load but again internet download speeds are not affected.)

  7. Can anyone out there please help with this problem? It seems to affect Chrome, Firefox and IE. It seems sometimes the lag is 20 seconds and maybe longer sometimes. It is always there. I do not know what to do anymore.

Easiest fix, restore to a point in time BEFORE you tried to fix something. See if the browsers launch faster; if not, revert to today's restore point.

  9. Easy if you have system restore on? I have it off myself. It is weird, I have had some slight improvements in speed for certain things loading better, just ever so slight. Still seem to have the nagging problems... I did a CCleaner scan. I scanned previously and still do with Ad-Aware and Malwarebyters. Should I try scanning with something else that is safe and will not mess things up? As listed above, in those certain two "steps" I may have messed up the internet connection thing with the reset.txt thing, if anyone can read through the entire thread which is of course not long.
