Hi, I am visiting my parents who are having a lot of problems with their computer. I am not sure if it is infected or not or just has a ton of stuff loading or something else. I have tried to get stuff to stop loading with mixed success (for example - how do you get AOL to stop loading all their stuff - like their icon, spyware zapper, etc - that loads automatically when you upgrade to Aol 9!!!) They are also having trouble starting up frequently getting a bad registry reverting to a previous version or multiple blue screens saying it can't find some DLL file or something else. It also has been restarting once Windows is open, saying something went bad.

Any help and advice would be much appreciated!

    They are running Win 98.

I followed the directions on the Read and Run me First page. I updated and ran Spybot and Ad-Aware in safe-mode. I am attaching my bitdefender report (which was clean.) I ran Panda but I was unable to click "See Report" (I cant find it anywhere!) but it was also clean. Here is a copy of the webpage. (Sorry about that!)

    HJT log also attached.

    Thanks so much!

    Panda webpage:

BTW - the spybot and ad-aware scans were both clean. I know my parents run spybot pretty regularly, though I am unsure about ad-aware. I could not figure out how to turn of teatimer in spybot, if it is currently on.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

You do not have any major malware problems for us to address in this forum. You should however uninstall

Viewpoint Manager <--- more junk from AOL

Also you can have HijackThis fix the below line.
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - (no file)

Other than that, you will have to talk to AOL or just experiment on your own to see what you can uninstall from them or stop from loading at startup but still have connectivity.

Glad to hear I am clean, though I am still having tons of problems with my computer!!! I have been having lots of trouble starting my computer today before I got your post.

I am getting the blue screen at start-up: "A fatal exception 0D has occurred at 0028:C000B28A in VXD VMM(01) + 0000A28A."

Then when windows finally starts up "Windows encountered an error accessing the system registry. Windows will restart and repair the system registry for you.

Then I get: "Required .DLL file XPRT5.DLL was not found."

Then it restarts and I get "Restored a Good Registry." It starts windows and it again pops up "Required .DLL file XPRT5.DLL was not found."

Viewpoint also adds itself back. Any advice on getting rid of it?

This is not malware. I suggest trying the software forum. But I do suspect that this file is part of AOL. Perhaps they are now installing stuff to block everyone in the world from uninstall crap like Viewpoint? I believe it is called XPRT Runtime Library.

Well my first advice would be to stop using AOL but since you probably cannot do that right now, try the below:

    ViewpointKiller

Note that any time you install, re-install, or update AOL software or AIM, they will install this crap without asking.

On such an older slower PC, you probably would be better off with an older version of AOL software.

Really appreciate your help. I have been telling my parents that AOL is slowing their computer down like mad, but having you say it they actually listen. LOL. So thank you for that! (They switched to AOL 8.0 or using IE to check e-mail and it is much faster....)
