    Hi guys,

    This has been doing my head in for about two weeks now!

    Is there such a thing as spyware, adware or maybe a virus that can slow your broadband speed down?

    I'm on 2mb but I'm getting speeds of 500kbps! So it's really baffliing why this is happening! I've spoken to my ISP and they've checked the line and reckon everything is ok...

    Does anyone know of any "nasties" that can slow down the connection?

    I hope someone can help me because I'm really lost.......!! :(

    Thanks guys

    JJ

    If you are on an "always on" connection, malware, instant messengers and other like minded programs use up some of this available bandwidth. Also, p2p networks take up quite a bit too.

    What speed tests are you using? Anything local?

    Malware has been know to cause problems like this. Run thru our cleaning procedures (below) so we can determine if you have any malware problems.

    Is your connection a DSL line or Cable?

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

    Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

    After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

    Hi,

    Many thanks for helping me. I've run programs such as, adware, spybot and anti-virus. But the speeds are still very slow.

    I'll run through your guide on my PC later; thanks for that. If it doesn't work I'll post a HiJackThis log.

    For your information I'm using 2mb Tiscali broadband...! I've been reading on the internet the joys of using these guys!!

    Your help is much appreciated

    Okay! If the HJT log is necessary, make sure you follow the directions on installing, using, and posting.

    ALL steps from the READ ME FIRST are to be run. I see no signs of the online scanners being run. Is there a reason for not running them? Did you skip anything else?

    There are no real major items in your log that would indicate a problem as you say your are seeing.

    But please explain why this: O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Fraps] C:\FRAPS\FRAPS.EXE always has to be loaded at startup. That would appear to be a waste of system resources unless you are always capturing real time video.

    You can have HijackThis fix the below lines:

    R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00000000-DD60-0064-6EC2-6E0100000000} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {E0E899AB-F487-11D5-8D29-0050BA6940E3} - (no file)

    I really wonder what your contract with Tiscali indicates. Is this a DSL connection? Did you sign a contract for CBR (Constant Bit Rate), VBR (Variable Bit Rate), or UBR (Unspecified Bit Rate)? CBR would be rather expensive and is not typically used for data. What traffic contract did they give you and what did the specify for PCR, SCR, MBS (the last two parameters only apply to VBR).

    PCR = Peak Cell Rate
    SCR = Sustained Cell Rate
    MBS = Maximum Burst Size

    It is also possible that they specified your contract by kbps rather than a cell rate. The conversion factor would be 1kbps/0.424 = 2.358 cell per second. So for example: 512 kbps = 1207.5 cps

    Quite often these contracts can be rather vague too. The may say things like "up to 2 Mbps" which does not mean you are guaranteed 2 Mbps. Even the loop length (the distance you are from the DSL equipment provider and the quality of the wires) will impact your DSL modem training rates which in turn impacts your speed. What speed was your line qualified for?
