Slow down

XP Pro, SP3, current updates, Comodo, A^2, Lenovo T60p Dual CPU - 2.1 ghz, 15.6" screen, 3 Gb computer memory, 3 cent operator memory

About 3 weeks ago my computer suddenly started a slow down rather oddly. Mostly it effects only the start up and shut down of some apps, taking 5 or 6 seconds where it was nearly instantaneous before. But is isn't always consistent. Firefox may shut down instantly or take extra time, for instance.

Data transfer doesn't seem to be effected. Anti-malware scans take the same amount of time as always. I usually have a couple GB's of memory available.

I installed Comodo recently and had to shut off the watchdog part of it twice to get it to stay away. Maybe some of that is still screwing things up? (I can't verify the time correlation) Or does this sound viral?

You posted in the malware forum so you need to run the read me first if you think you are infected, otherwise I can move this thread to another forum?

Looking at recently installed programs is a good idea. You only really need ONE good anti-virus program and some common sense. Most scanners scan differently and some can be very aggressive taking a long time to scan every single file that is affected on your drive. Doing this repeatedly with numerous programs is asking for a slowdown. Example, Panda Cloud antivirus is fast, Microsoft Security Essentials is the slowest on the market (at this time).

Be sure you are running ONE good anti-virus program and your anti-malware apps are used only for scanning and report back.

I've been through the whole thing before when a utility told me I had a rootkit. You were very antipathetic then too. I have one primary anti-malware app that covers a whole gamut of things. I also have MalwareBytes and SAS installed but not running. I occasionally use them for scans when there is trouble and Emsi doesn't catch anything. I do NOT use their watch dog features - ever - only the one in Emsi. In years, on one occasion has one, MB, found one virus (recently). SAS pulls out piles of cookies, even though I have cookies blocked 95% of the time.

The last thing I installed was Open Office, weeks before the odd slow downs started.

I'm also running Comodo, as my OP said.

I read very slowly and am not going to read everything again again if you are going to tell me to get lost.

I have been keeping a close watch and running almost daily scans for years. I know you think I've asked a very stupid question, but I ask again, does my description of what is happening, distinctly but rather intermittently, sound viral. I don't think that question belongs in any other forum and I don't think you should be yelling at me for asking it. The question is designed to NOT go through everything if it looks like something entirely different; so I asked.

Calm down, nobody told you to get lost. ;)

Not really, no, but you can follow the usual instructions which I will link to for refernce. That is the only way I can get a proper look at your machine.

Nobody yelled. :confused I may *have* to move this thread to another forum if I do not find any malware.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.
