On a eMachine T2958 When you start the PC it takes a while before it gets to the windows screen. Is there any way to speed this up. The PC runs great after that.It takes about 3 times as long as any of my other ones. Thanks in advance Chuck

To speed your systems boot time, please do the following:

    1. Disable as many startup items as you can

    Windows 98/ME/XP/2003
    - Hit windows key + r (or click Start --> Run)
    - Type 'msconfig' (without the quotes)
    - Press enter (or click 'OK')
    - Select the 'Startup' tab
    - Uncheck as many as you feel safe doing

    Windows 2000
    - Hit windows key + r (or click Start --> Run)
    - Type 'regedit' (without the quotes)
    - Press enter (or click 'OK')
    - Check HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\current version\run and HKCU\software\microsoft\windows\current version\run and delete as many as you feel safe doing.

Note: You should always have a backup of the registry before modifying it.

    Windows All Versions
    - Check Start --> Programs --> Startup
    - Delete as many items there as possible.

    2. Visit the disable unneccessary services thread and follow the instructions there.

    3. Run CCleaner to clean temp files. This can also be used for the first part of step 1.

    4. Windows XP Delete all files in C:\windows\prefetch

    5. Defrag you computer
    - Click Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Disk Defragmenter.

If you still have a problem after this, you could try the malware removal thread to ensure that your system isn't being affected by viruses or spyware.

Mada_Milty Thanks for your reply,I have just done a complete os install,I run cc cleaner,In start up I just have AVG checked. In programs Start up says empty.prefetch(a new one on me) is all deleted.
The time I am talking about,is from the time I push the start button to the Time that windows first screen starts to load. The Big E stays on longer than on most eMachines it seem to me:confused: . Does all this load before the windows first screen,or does it start after? Thanks alot:) I have used your info.now and saved it for later use.Chuck(my name)
