Auto tuning is a new way of Windows (Vista) handshaking with routers.

Only gotcha is that most routers don't yet support it. Some can be updated in firmware.

So go back to your command prompt and type in

netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled

Let us know how you get on.

i typed netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled
in command promt and this is what it said

set global command failed on IPv4 the requested operation requires elevation

That's why users are so in love with Vista - It gives you a way to do what you want by grovelling to BG.

To run the command prompt elevated,
click on Start, All Programs> Accessories
right click on Command Prompt and click on "Run as > administrator"
and then provide consent when User Account Control prompts> you.
Then try executing the command again.

Finally restart both pc and router

I take it this pc once worked with this connection?

OK well are you able to test the router / connection with another pc. It would be worth making this effort as any further action on your pc could be more drastic.

If the router / connection proves good then your pc has some interference.

Either malware or perhaps your firewall. Have you introduced any new programs just before this started, in particular new internet security or firewalls?

You can reset the Vista firewall to factory conditions (on) by again going to netsh, from an administrator command line.

    typein 'netsh'

    a new prompt will appear

    typein 'advfirewall'

    at the next prompt

    typein 'reset'

    press enter

    restart pc.

You really need to provide more info about the pc /router /isp and how they connect.

    Which browser are you using?
Download a different one from MG here an see if that performs properly.
You can get a situation with IE where the multiple toolbars conflict, especially if you have IE's own popup blocker enabled.

How are you getting on with my other suggestions?

In particular trying another pc to prove the connection?

Fixing It stuff is all about working through the possibilities until you get the right one.

Netgear have a very helpful UK telephone helpline. I don't have a netgear router to hand to look it up for you, but the number is stored in the control pages of the router and with the documentation.

I have always found netgear very reliable and generally offer them for installations.

I recommend you get all the details of the modem, router, pc etc ready to hand when you phone. Also do the hard reset - it is the first thing they will ask. They can also interrogate the router over your broadband for faults.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

I note the MR 814 is an 802.11b and cable device.

I did ask how are you connecting?
    If you are using wireless
Is Vista and the wireless card in your pc (I still don't know if it is a laptop or what) set up for 802.11b not 802.11g?

You say it works better, plugged in. Well it will 802.11 is quite slow.
Again I ask, did it ever work with wireless?
