My Dell 8000 laptop is running so slowly I'm afraid it is about to fail. It is slow on boot-up, slow to open programs and files, slow to download.

I've run all of the steps to clean malware, and none was detected. So I may be in the wrong forum, but I've attached the HijackThis log to see if anyone can advise what I should do. Thanks for any help you can provide!

No, I'm working on two different computers. Having worked through the process with the first, which is badly infected with malware, I turned to the second--the laptop, which turns out to be clean according to the tests run so far, but still barely functioning. Because they are two separate computers, with different issues, I created a separate thread.

I greatly appreciate this site and the advice and tips you are providing. I certainly hope I haven't exceeded my welcome.

Then you need to follow the steps below.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
    • Bitdefender
    • Panda Scan
    • HijackThis
    .

    chas,

I followed all of the steps in the Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support. All of the scans in all 6 of the steps were clean. Thus I only attached the HJT log, in hopes that it would reveal something that I could do to restore this laptop to health.
    Thanks.

    - The below should have been uninstall in step 0 of the READ ME:
    C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

    - No logs for step 6 have been attached.

HJT logs by themselves are not that useful. Simple answer to your log is you have no malware problems other than Viewpoint Manager.

You problems are more than likely not malware. Possibly heat, or driver issues, memory problems, hard disk problems, or file system corruption.

Sorry, I missed Viewpoint. I have now eliminated it, and have re-run Bitdefender, ActiveScan, and HJT. Fresh logs attached. I realize it doesn't look like malware is the problem here, but any advice you can give will be appreciated.

As suspected, there is no evidence of malware. Let's just check a little deeper first before totally excluding malware:

    Download & run Blacklight Beta
    • Hit I accept. It will take you to download page.
    • Download blbeta.exe and save it to the Desktop.
    • Once saved... double click blbeta.exe to install the program.
    • Click accept agreement and Click scan
This app too may fire off a warning from antivirus. Let the driver load.
      Wait for it to finish.
    • If it displays any items...don't do anything with them yet. Just hit exit (close)
    • It will drop a log on Desktop that starts with fsbl....big number
Please attach the Blacklight log file here.

    Questions:
    1) How does your PC behave if you run in safe mode? Does it still seem slow to open programs and files?
    2) Are you able to connect to the internet in safe mode? If so, how does downloading working in safe mode?

Blacklight didn't find anything; log attached.

    You asked:
    1) How does your PC behave if you run in safe mode? Does it still seem slow to open programs and files?
    2) Are you able to connect to the internet in safe mode? If so, how does downloading working in safe mode?

    Answers:

    1. It is significantly faster in safe mode, though still a bit sluggish.
    2. I can connect in safe mode, so long as the networking button is selected (I'm working through a home network with a cable modem and router).

Hmmm??? Faster in safe mode but still sluggish???? What is your reference point for speed comparisons? And how long ago did you start having problems? Was anything installed/uninstalled or changed on the system just before it got this way. When was Google Desktop Search installed?

Is downloading in safe mode faster too?

My judgment of speed is subjective--do I have a sense of having to wait and tap my fingers while the computer executes a request. The problem did not begin suddenly, and was not associated with the installation of Google Desktop. It's been installed for a few months or so.

If you mean by downloading in safe mode, loading web pages, yes it is significantly faster. If you mean downloading files or attachments, I'd have to check. (I'm using a healthy computer, not the sick one.)

    Suggestions? Thanks.

I'm not sure what to tell you but your problems are not malware. And you do not even have a firewall installed yet which will also cause a performance hit. Perhaps you need to just see if any particular program is causing you a problem. You can use MSConfig to selectively control which items run at startup (including services) and which do not run. Maybe you can determine what you problem is. Since you believe it is better in safe mode than in normal boot mode, you can compare what is running in both modes and possible find if a particular program is causing you problems. However, none of this is really a topic for this forum since you do not appear to have malware problems.

Thanks for your help, Chas. One question: should I delete any of the programs downloaded as directed by the "Read & Run Me First" sticky? In particular, is there a problem with having Windows Defender and McAfee both installed?

You're welcome! Thats really two questions.;)

No you do not need to delete any of them.
No there is no problem using Windows Defender and McAfee. They are not the same kind of programs but you do not have McAfee anyway. You have AVG.

You're welcome. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point. While it is not technically really necessary to reboot inbetween, I personally prefer that it be done that way and feel it is a safer approach.

After that, you should work thru the below link:
