    XP Pro, SP2.

PC is very slow. Followed all steps. Spybot, Adaware, Spysweeper and Counterspy all found many items, and was able to remove them all. Bitdefender found nothing, but Panda Activescan found s few. Attached is the Panda Activescan log and HJT log.

Also, McAfee finds Sony Rootkit XCP, but cannot remove.

    Thanks.

Is your McAfee Antivirus part of AOL Antivirus application? If not, you have two antivirus applications installed and one must go.

Also you have AOL Antispyware running and if you plan on keep it, you should uninstall CounterSpy. Is CounterSpy a free version or paid version?

Did you set the below about:blank page yourself?
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Task Manager Service] taskmngr64.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Task Manager Service] taskmngr64.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows Kernel 64] C:\WINDOWS\system32\kernal64.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows Kernel 64] C:\WINDOWS\system32\kernal64.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Task Manager Service] taskmngr64.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Task Manager Service] taskmngr64.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete
    :
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmngr64.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\kernal64.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST)
    .

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

    Thanks Chaslang.

Yes, I beleive the McAfee is bundled with AOL. The Counterspy was the free version. I went ahead and uninstalled it.

    No, I didn't set the about:blank page.

I followed your steps with HJT, and then rebooted in Safe Mode, however the two files you instructed me to delete in Windows/System32, did not appear there.

Here is a new HJT log.

    Thanks.

Then have HJT fix the below line:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

HJT more than likely was able to delete them.

    How is everything working?

Removed that R0 line and reset the web settings.

No more pop ups, but the PC is still moving really slow. Maybe that is related to something different.

McAffee still reports the XCP Sony Rootkit. Is that really anything to be worried about?

    Thanks.

More than likely it is not malware! AOL is just slow as heck and using McAfee from them compounds it. You also don't need the below to load:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

You can have HJT fix that line.

I don't see any signs of the Sony Rootkit in your log. Where was it detected? Was it in System Restore? It is not a major problem but most people remove it. You need to be sure that it will not cause your any problems playing any of their DRM protected CDs. You can read more about it and how to remove it in the below link:
