My PC (Browsing) has really slowed down about 1-2 months ago. I.E. 6 began running slow and updated to 7.0. Still slow. No sure if I have a hardware or software problem. May possibly be an update problem with Windows updates or some other update. I have no Malware messages from my regular security programs, Bitdefender or SpySweeper. I have followed Major Attitudes guide to getting started. All worked well except the Bitdefender online scan. I will post a bitdender log from an offline scan. It would not load virus definitions or run. I can only assume because Bitdefender is already loaded on my system. I received no errors from Panda or counterpy. Please review logs for any problems that may exist. thanks

Additional logs attached. I have also noticed a 1.2G file located on C:, it is titled 62E.tmp. Created on 12/16/06. Do not know what it belongs to. Also have in C: a folder containing a txt file called msxml4-KB927978-enu. Think these can be deleted?

Since you have Spy Sweeper installed, uninstall CounterSpy now to avoid conflicts and it will also slow your system down having both running.

Your problems may not be malware but rather what you are running!

What version of Spy Sweeper do you have?

Also uninstall all current versions of Sun Java that you have installed.

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Do ALL of the above before continuing on to the below.

You did not follow the directions in the READ & RUN ME for at least 2 items & possibly a 3rd:
    1. BitDefender Online Scan! You posted a log from Bitdefender 9 which is the full antivirus program. This is not the online scan. Did you just install Bitdefender 9 while running the READ ME or did you already have it installed as you every day antivirus program. When you try to run the Bitdefender online scan do you get any error messages?
    2. You did not follow the directions for extracting all files from GetRunKey.zip and running the .bat file from a Windows Explorer session. You ran it from inside the ZIP file. Thus the log is incomplete and not useful.
    3. You did not follow the directions for extracting all files from ShowNew.zip and running the .bat file from a Windows Explorer session. You ran it from inside the ZIP file. Thus the log is incomplete and not useful.
Please follow the directions on the download pages for GetRunKey and ShowNew. Also take note of possible error messages which could also stop them from running properly. Attach new logs from them.

    1. Counterspy now uninstalled.
    2. Spy Sweeper Version 5.2.3.2132 is running
    3. I uninstalled all Java, I hope correctly. I used the control panel/ add & remove. I also found the Java folder & deleted it as it still existed. It still contained all previous versions. Rebooted and installed New Jave Runtime 1.6.

Regarding Bitdefender Online Scan; I have not been able to get it to work in either safe mode w/networking or in a normal. Get an error message indicating unable to load virus definitions. I do have the paid version of bitdefender for about a year.

Ran Getrun & Shownew. They are created in C:\Spyware Tools. They were extracted and the files extraced to the same folder by default. Should they be extracted to a different folder? I closed all folders and ran the .bat file (labled as batch w/blue window pane & a cog wheel) using the start/explore option.

When running both Getrun & Shownew, i get an error message that Symantec\s32evnt1.dll driver failed to initialize. Have to hit ignore for program to continue.

    New logs attached, Thanks

This could be part of your problem with the PC running slow. I will give you something to try later after I get all logs needed.

Read the error messages on the download pages for both GetRunKey and ShowNew. You are getting one of the messages describe and you need to follow the directions there. Then attach new logs.

Also attach a new log from HJT so I can give you something that may help work around some problems with Spy Sweeper (they blame them on Sun Java).

    Ok Chaslang,

GetRun and ShowNew corrections were made. No errors this time. New logs attached along with HJT log. Was doing some research earlier today and looks like lots of people are having problems with recent Spysweeper updates. That's a shame, I previously had good words for Spysweeper.

    Thanks

Delete the below left over from CounterSpy:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Terry\Local Settings\Application Data\Sunbelt Software

Also have HJT fix the below two lines from Sun Java which may help performance.
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0\bin\jusched.exe"
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0\bin\ssv.dll

The conflict between Sun Java and Spy Sweeper normally occurs when you see and O2 BHO line in HijackThis for Sun Java's ssv.dll file. But you do not seem to have this BHO present. However, I have seen in general that the newer versions of Spy Sweeper can slow some PCs down so much that you just cannot use Spy Sweeper and it had nothing to do with Sun Java.

    Your logs are clean!

I have done reccomendations and Explorer does run faster. It also helped to uninstall spysweeper and reinstall after Sun Java had been updated. Spysweeper does seem to slow system slightly when turned on, but not nearly as much as before your changes.

One final question. I have a large file titled 62E.tmp located in C:. This file is 1.2 Gig. Shows to be created on 12/16/06. Do not know where this came from and restore points do not show any changes for that date. Should this be safe to delete since it is a .tmp file?

Again, a big Thanks for all of your help. Internet browsing is back to being enjoyable.

    You're welcome.

Yes you can delete that file.
