    Hello,

I have a new computer that I've built, and it was blazing fast, until a few days ago. Youtube became so slow that the ads need to pause to buffer. even at 360p it is very very laggy. It used to load 720p or 1080p without any problem.
I have tried clear all cookies, cache, browsing data... etc.
Other than Youtube, the startup of my PC became a bit slow. I am suspecting it's a virus or something, but I am not sure. I've ran AVG scans, spysweeper scans, SUPERanti-spyware, CCcleaner, Malwarebytes, and MGtools, but only 1 torjan showed up on MG tools, and even after that no improvements are shown.

    What should I do?

    Thank you

If you had one of the scans show a trojan then I would recommend doing the entire read and run me first from the malware forum and post up your logs over there. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

If you verify that everything is clean then I would try to troubleshoot other possible issues.

    Welcome to the forum jineus

I would do as gosh1976 suggested but also make sure the Disk Drive has NOT been compressed. In My Computer, right click on the C drive and go to properties. In the new window make sure the box near the bottom of the small window is not ticked that says something like "Compress drive to save space". This forces all data on the drive to be compressed which means it has to be uncompressed to be read and recompressed to be saved or stored including inbound streaming data such as You Tube. This, along with a fragmented drive can cause some very serious performance issues with a computer.

One more thing to look at is in your Browser, make sure something has not redirected you through a proxy. In Internet Explorer, Go to Tools and down to Internet Options and click on the Connections tab. Click the LAN Settings button near the bottom and make sure none of the boxes are ticked in there.

    Hi,

I have done all the malware thing on the MajorGeeks website, and didn't find anything other than that torjan.

Although I haven't looked at the log, nor I know how to read a log.

My hard drive isn't on the compressed settings.

However, I tried my network with my itouch, and it is very very slow on the itouch as well. I think it might be the network's problem, not the computer.

Oh, and I use google chrome, and how can I check for proxy settings?

    Thank you

okay, i realized that Internet explorer and Google Chrome share the same proxy settings. I did find that one of the checkmarks were checked on the LAN settings, so I unchecked it, but there isn't any improvements.

I searched on some websites, and it said to change the DNS server.

how does that work, and how do I change it?

    Thank you

Do you have other computers on this same internet connection and are they also experiencing slow service?

If you could post screen shots of the services that are running in the Task Manager, it might help. To get there, go to your task ber at the bottom of the screen and right click your mouse and go to Task Manager.

If the problem seems isolated to your computer only, I would suggest flushing your DNS cache at this point. To do so, got the start button and go to run. Type cmd and hit enter. In the black window type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter. (no quotes)

Then you could turn off the Windows DNS cache which isn't necessary. To do that, in the same black window type "net stop dnscache" and hit enter. (no quotes) This only stops the service temporarily, it will restart with the reboot.

See if that makes a difference.

If you have done everything in the R&R malware forum then you would have posted the logs required and the malware fighters anylise your logs to tell you whether your all clear or not ! :major

I tried flushing the DNS Cache and stopped the DNS Cache, but those didn't do anything.

Also, I just posted my logs on the Malware forum.

    Thank you

You could try looking up the DNS servers for your ISP and see if there are alternates that might give you better results. When in doubt, not usually faster but on occassion I have used 4.2.2.2 as a test DNS server or when I don't know the ISP's DNS server and I need to look it up. I don't know that your issue points to DNS though

To change the DNS server on just your computer for testing, you can override the DHCP network settings and put in just the DNS server manually.

Search for DNS servers from your ISP. Try to find at least 2 sets that are paired but far apart from eachother, something like XX.11.22.23 & XX.11.22.25 and then try XX.99.99.10 and XX.99.99.11

To access the DNS settings, (this is XP and assuming you use DHCP from the router, your steps may vary)
    Control Panel
    Network Connections
right click on your connection and select Properties
in the box the last is Internet Protocol TCP/IP, double click that
enter the dns servers in the lower portion of the box.
Ok your way out of it and retest
no change? Repeat with other pair of DNS
no change? go in again and remove dns servers, return to Obtain DNS server automatically

    Not a malware issue. ;)

Can you try booting into Safe Mode with Networking and see if the same slow down persists?
If it speeds back up, there may have been a software update from an installed program that caused the problem. You could look in Event Viewer for details of changes at the time you noticed the slow down.
    (Left field suggestion)

If you use a router in addition to a modem in your network, try updating the firmware. You may also want to reset back to default settings and redo your network connections.

I like this for a troubleshooting step. A lot. I don't think it's left field at all.
I wouldn't know what my exact next step would be if Safe Mode worked, but it sure would give a direction.

    1) If the date of slow down is known, use System Restore.
    2) If date of slow down is known, look at Event Viewer application logs for possible software changes.
    3) If Win7 OS, use Start up manager to isolate programs to see if one of them is the culprit. If XP, use msconfig.
After that, someone else might have some other suggestions cause I'm bone dry.;)
