I am having a problem with my comp. starting up slowly. I'm not sure but i think xp service pack 2 is the cause. Before i installed the service pack the pc would boot up no problem. Any one else having the similiar problem?
The pc is asus motherboard, amd64 3200+ processor, 2 gig of ram( 1-1gig pc 3200, 2- 512 pc 2700) win xp serv. pac 2, 2 - 200 gig seagate SATA hd's set up in raid 0, and 1 80 gig ide WD hd as back-up.
What can i do to speed up the start up and to also speed the pc in general?

Try running msconfig, and under the startup tab un-click all options click on apply and then close and click on restart option.
Let me know if this works.

I tried unchecking everything in start-up, still the same problem. I have xp pro, so after it gets to the black screen that says xp it goes to a blue on blue screen that says welcome, it stays on that screen for a bit then it goes to a solid blue screen for a while longer before it actually shows my desktop screen. It takes about 3-5 mins from the time i press the power button till it goes to the desktop screen. I have no idea why.

Do you have an virus checking program running? If so turn it off and reboot.
If it's Norton, remove it and install Avast and see if that helps..

I do have Norton Internet Security, I have been using it for years now, so I dont really believe that is the cause. Also when i turned everything off with msconfig Norton was also off. It didnt load at start-up. There is something else causing the problem, I'm thinking service pack 2. I would rather not format again nor do a system restore since I installed sp2 the same day i installed win xp. That would mean I would lose pretty much everything. Was hoping for a quick fix.
I also wanted to thank you for your help.

I agree with ross, you need to completely un-install Nortons and Install Avast or AVG. Nortons is know to be a resorce hog, and if you have it set to run at start up you will have a "system bog" if you will. Avast and AVG run light on the system.
Check you settings in Nortons to see if you have it scanning at start up. By turning this setting off, you may gain a little more speed at start up, but like I said, Nortons is a system hog.

You also need to know that by shutting off Nortons in msconfig, that you did not turn all of Nortons off. Try going into administrative tools, services.
Scan through to the Nortons & Symantec programs to see which start automatically. Right click on the program, click stop first, then go to the drop down list and select disable. Once you have done this to all that apply to Nortons & Symantec, reboot the comp. This will tell you if Nortons is causing some of this problem.
