    Sorry, my bad.

You don't connect the IDE drive to the SATA port. You leave it as is, and connect the SATA drive to port 0. After cloning, simply shut down and disconnect the Molex power plug from the IDE drive.

According to Dell, you should have four SATA ports, 0,1,2, and 3.

The Easeus disc is the boot disc, and the destination drive is the new drive. Both drives should be identified by size, and type. The destination drive is the SSD.

Bootable disk is burn using Easeus software/, once I boot with this disk,
Will this software copy all the files from c:/drive to my new SSD?(cloning)
    2.
I have to wait till I get my data cable from newegg.
    3.
Once I clone the disk can I just disconnect IDE drive after diconnecting power source(TURN OFF) and restart computer by making SSD as a boot drive.

There is no jumper cable to set SSD drive as primary drive. What is require to make this drive as a primary drive once clone is done so that it will boot from SSD drive

Slave and master only applies to old IDE/PATA drives it does not apply to SATA drives.
You are connecting the ssd by thin red cable, correct?

I am ready now to clone. Got my drive, bracket and data cable. Ready to install my new SSD drive.

    I have following questions:
    1.
How do I clone my drive? which software I should use?
    2.
Do I have to formate my new drive before cloning?
    3.
Need step by step instructions because I am not expert with computer fixing.

Sorry I was absent, I had a rush job on a laptop to knock out.

First thing you want to do is download Easeus' freeware (FREE! YAY!) cloning software:

    http://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/home-edition/

Download the software, run it, and follow the instructions to burn a bootable disc.

Make sure both drives are connected, put the disk in the tray, and boot the machine. The software should give you the option to format the drive. Choose the source (EIDE/PATA), and the destination (SATA/SSD) then clone.

If you need any additional details, or have questions please post.

Did you disconnect the old drive?

Is the BIOS set to AHCI, or "manufactuer default"?

No I have not disconnected old drive.

When I click on my computer I see only one SSD drive, Why cant I see my old drive (IDE) eventho it is connected.

I will set bios to AHCI or manufacturer default.

Now I do not see that blue screen, my computer is on for 3hrs.

Tried to set bios by pressing f2 before the operating system load.
After that I did not find any place how to set bios. Need help.

Can I format my IDE drive and use it as D;/ drive?

Why cant I see IDE drive when I click on my comuter?

SDI is connected to SATA 0 and IDE connected to SATA 1 port , IDE was connected to SATA port 0 befor I install new SSD dr.,

  16. the mekanic

    the mekanic Major Mekanical Geek

It's possible that port 1 is turned off in the BIOS. I thought you said the old drive is a ribbon/pin connector?

Yes, you can wipe that drive and use it for data but because of it's age I won't call it 100% reliable.

What does your BIOS screen look like? Are the categories at the top of the screen, or in the left hand column?

Has your boot time improved any?

  17. bombaykid

    bombaykid Private First Class

    1.
Port one is not turn off because when I clone the drive I was able to see both drive.
    2. Old drive was not connected with ribbon , it was connected with SATA Cable.
    3.
Bios screen has categories to the left hand column of screen.
    4.
Boot time is still 5 min.
    5.
Will send you a screen image of BIOS screen as soon as I figure out how to
do it , I will try using ctr key and print screen and paste in paint. I do not know if this will work.

  18. bombaykid

    bombaykid Private First Class

Can not send print screen, it want work.

this what it says : Factory default setting is raid autodetect / AMCI

  19. the mekanic

    the mekanic Major Mekanical Geek

You want it set to "AHCI". Also, you can view the settings for each individual drive in that BIOS. Drive 0 will be your boot drive, and drive 1 will be your old drive. For the purposes of diagnostics, please disconnect the old drive.

  20. bombaykid

    bombaykid Private First Class

It does not allow me to change to "AHCI" I will double check and see wether it is AHCI or Amci, it could be my fault in coping.

    Next point

Some one told me that the
PARTITION STARTING OFFESET DIVIDED BY 4096 SHOULD BE FULL NUMBER
In my case it is 32256/4096=7.875 not a full number. What can be done

When I clone it did not give me any opportunity to partition or format the drive, it just clone the drive.

  21. bombaykid

    bombaykid Private First Class

I double check bios and it is "AHCI" It was my typo error I typed amci instead of ahci

  22. the mekanic

    the mekanic Major Mekanical Geek

Never heard of a partition being divisible by 4GB evenly.

After cloning, the new drive will be an exact copy of your old one. Any other issues which need to be resolved will carry over, even malware.

Have you run CCleaner, and eliminated programs running at startup?

Glad to see I'm not the only one running an SSD in an old P4.

    Is the error 0x000007B?
If so, the BSOD is caused by the system not having the AHCI drivers installed.

Set the BIOS to "ATA" or "IDE" mode, the system should boot properly as Windows will have the drivers for the SATA controller installed already.

Let us know when (if?) you get to a working desktop and we'll continue from there.

Edit: Please disconnect the old drive as Mekanic instructed. Thanks!

    Only one problem left.

I have new SSd as a boot drive and it is booting up alright.

SSD is connected to SATA 0 port.

My old drive is connected to SATA 1 port

But when I click on my computer only one drive (new SSD) drive shows up, the old one can not be seen.

There was a jumper between pin one and pin 2, I removed that jumper but still The drive is not visible.

What can be done to see 2nd drive when I click my computer>

  25. bombaykid

    bombaykid Private First Class

Now I can see both the drives. The problem was as follows:

SSD drive was plug in to sata port 0
    &
old drive was plug in to sata port 1 which was not turn on. Sata port no. 2 was on so I plug the old drive to sata port 2 and problem is solve.

BUT NOW THERE IS ANOTHER PROBLEM

I CAN NOT RUN THE COMPUTER IN SAFE MODE, I TRIED 3 TIMES BUT EVERY TIME IT FROZE AND BLUE SCREEN CAME ON.[/FONT][/B]

    More problems
    1.

    2.
When i start the computer before loading os it stops and massege is "can not find floppy", click f1 to continue f2 to setup. I do not have floppy disk on my computer. I must have done somthing wrong.3
Start up time went up to 7 min.

I do not have floppy disk installed in my computer but when I start computer I get following before it load operating system:

"can not find floppy", click f1 to continue f2 to setup. "

(I un-installed floppy drive and floppy drive controller but still I get this messege)

Why do I get this messege? I have to click f1 to continue and once i click f1 it loads operating system in 6 to7 min.

Once the computer is on it works without any problem. It is faster in opening up files and loading new programs.

    Any suggestions??????????????

You have to disable the floppy drive in the BIOS.

  34. BoatDiesel82

    BoatDiesel82 Private E-2

    Lets get this straight-

will the computer still boot normally (*not* safe mode) to a working desktop, regardless of the time it takes?

or, does the computer bluescreen? If so, you will see the error. Dollars to donuts it's 7B.

Again, please disconnect the original hard drive. Having two drives with the same ID can cause issues and it impedes the troubleshooting we're trying to do.

Here's what I think is happening- the original drive as I understand was IDE (PATA). (Has a wide ribbon cable)

The new drive is SATA, and it's probably configured in the BIOS to use AHCI mode. Windows doesn't have the AHCI drivers for the controller, so after the initial bootloader initializes Windows loses communication with the drive and stops working.

The quick fix is to set the mode of the SATA controller to "Legacy" "Emulation" or "IDE" mode in the BIOS. This will make the SATA controller appear to Windows as an IDE controller, so the existing drivers will work.

Changing it to AHCI later on isn't that hard but we need to get the system working first.

The boot order may be incorrect, IIRC F12 at POST will bring up a boot device menu. Check the boot order in the BIOS, and set your new SSD as the first boot device. (Or second, with the CD/DVD drive as the first device)

Again, double check that the SATA mode is set to "IDE" or the like.

I recall Dells of this era having a less than stellar BIOS setup routine.

If that doesn't work, try F12 and see if it lists your SSD.

YES I HAVE SET SSD AS FIRST BOOT DEVICE. AND CD/DVD AS A 2ND BOOT DEVICE,

    Sorry, I've been busy lately.

When you review your boot order, make sure the only devices listed are the ones which are physically installed.

Even though the floppy may be turned "off" it could still be looking for it if it is listed.

Have you tried loading the defaults?

Double check to make sure the floppy is "turned off" in the BIOS. It is still looking for it for some reason.
