Is there a way to slow the UDMA down on a Laptop HDD? The drive is Hitachi DK23DA-20F.

I fail to see how changing your UDMA will make it detect your hard drive.... The systems bios will automaticly set the fastest supported mode... on old system like that it most likely only supports PIO any way... And i dont understand why you whant to put a 20GB drive in a 486....

I only have a 20GB HDD that fits laptops. If I slow down the hard drive it wont crash as much. Right now its 100MB/S, Which is way too fast for a 486.

If a BIOS doesn't support UDMA, it downgrades to PIO. The OS must support UDMA as well. No drive runs in UDMA only.

This is not the problem. The drive is not compatible.

We are talking about taking a drive from today's tech and interfacing it with something retired 12+ years ago.

I'm surprised you got as far as you did.

splitt3r You are now the victim of a drive by title change

why are you trying to do anything on a 486?

Can anyone tell me how to so I can see if this isn't the problem Then I can move to another problem?

    Ok, this is getting ridiculous.

The drive does not run at UDMA speeds unless the BIOS allows it.

    The drive is not compatible.

Aren't you curious why nobody is giving you the answer you desire?

    Because there isn't one.

How many people do you think would have a 500MB Laptop drive?

Try the Buy, Sell & Trade Forum, or eBay etc, although I doubt it.
