Here is what i recently did: fan out the computer, change hard drive to master and cd-rom drive to slave.

I am noticing a considerable ( 50% ) loss in my fps in games like CounterStrike Source and Guild Wars. I tried toning down the graphic quality, but it still runs at a lowered fps. Everything else i do, like surf the web, i don't notice a slowdown. Anyone know what happened to my computer?

Reverse everything you did at this stage? That might get you back to where you were. Bazza

    Don't understand your reply.

    Original post was:-

"Here is what i recently did: fan out the computer, change hard drive to master and cd-rom drive to slave."
I would have thought you could reverse this. Bazza

Ok I must be missing something here. Do you have more than one hard drive & if not, why would you have needed to "change it" to Master? Also....more than one rom drive & if not, why make it a slave? They are not hooked to the same IDE Channel ( cable ) are they?

By "fan out" do you mean removing the dust? :)

    Install nvidia detonator drivers,
what are your results in benchmark?
I dont see how changing the location or settings of your drives affect your fps, does your graphics card use a active or passive coolant? (active = fan)
Did you changed any bios settings or reset bios?

Sry for being so vague, but heres my story

First off, a while ago, I had updated my nvidia driver to 71.89, but had noticed a significant frames per second decrease, so I rolled back to 71.84, which ran fine. Then...

I fanned out my computer ( clearing the dust ). Then when I turned on my computer afterwards, I notice my CD-ROM drive is set to master and my Hard drive is set to slave. It doesn't allow me to boot windows, so I switch the Hard drive jumper from cable select to Master. ( I only have one IDE slot on my mobo, so I have to use one cable, with CD-ROM on top and Hard drive on bottom of IDE ribbon )

After I turned on my computer and ran some applications, I found myself in the same situation as when I had the 71.89 driver. I reformatted because I didn't know what else to do, but now even with any driver, I get that same low fps. I believe it had something to do with the fanning out part, maybe the graphics card got damaged...

I don't know what detonator drivers are, I have an active fan for my graphics card, and I haven't changed any BIOS settings.

I benchmarked my comp using 3dmark05, and surprisingly...

I got a score of 2376, while the averages for my same video card is around 3300...

My CPU score was 1380, while the average was around 4000...

Is there something really wrong with my hardware?

Ok first off, setting your cdrom from master to slave will not affect that much, you didn't need to change the jumper setting as you can change the boot order of your devices in the bios menu. e.g. floppy drive is nor master nor slave, in fact, it doenst even use a primairy or secundary ide port but in most cases the floppy drive is primairy boot device.
Even though, if cdrom is set to primairy boot device you still can boot from harddisk if there isnt any boot-able media in the cdrom drive, you said you didn't changed anything in the bios but i'm not to sure about that, didn't you accidentally loaded the default config or fail-safe config? Do you have an AGP slot? you are using pci-express maybe it's conflicting with your agp slot, check mobo manual to manually disable agp slot.

In the event that your system does not support the above, you may be able to disable the onboard video card in the operating system using the instructions below.

Make sure that the new PCI video card is not installed in your computer.

    Windows XP/2000

    1. Right-click My Computer and select Properties.
    2. Click the Hardware tab, and then click the Device Manager button.
    3. Click View, and then Show Hidden Devices.
    4. Click the Plus (+) sign next to the Display Adapters category to expand it.
    5. Select the onboard graphics controller under Display Adapters and click Disable. Click OK to confirm.
    6. Do not restart the computer until the controller is disabled.
    7. Turn the computer off.

    8. Install your PCI GeForce card and follow the included instructions from the card manufacturer.

I only have a PCI-E slot and 3 PCI slots, no AGP or onboard. I probably did load the default BIOS settings though, but after I couldn't boot.

You could update or re-install the bios of your pci-e card,
it may be corrupted. Go to the manufaturers website (not nvidia) to download bios.
If you don't know how to do it then leave it, it may permanently damage your video card when incorrectly installed!

That is correct, altough this is an example and i dont speak/read japanese.
I checked the site and you should download this file: GV-NX62TC256D8, this includes the latest bios version
unzip the .exe, remember the location (unzip in root of C: is easy to remember e.g. C:\nvidia),
reboot in dos by using a boot floppy and run the gvf15.exe

It might be that simple but i'd still advise that you let a professional handle it

wouldn't it be GV-NX66T128D instead? since i have a 6600gt with 128mb video memory. Your file is for a 6200 w/ 256 video mem.

No im sure, the one you got is an older version, check site for a list of chipsets.

You can also check the readme file included, you'll see that your card supports these chipsettings, are you sure you still want to push through?

    Crap your right,
the readme.txt is a list of vga card that support the flash util from gigabyte
so sorry, you need to download the util first and via the util install the file you mentioned

Yes that's the one, im sorry for the confusion, my fault.
I was at work earlier so i didn't had too much time to read the whole content.
Im positive that you have the correct one (the utility comes with the download)

ok, i ran the command prompt and did everything right, but it says " This VGA card is unknown " even though it has my video card on the readme list.

  26. criminelis

you have to boot in dos, the command prompt will not do

Ok, I reflashed using the nx66t7d. There was a message that stated bios doesn't match video card, but it ran anyways. Now, it still runs at a slow speed. I ran 3dmark05 and got a small improvement, 2735. The CPU score is still really low, 1400. Could it be my cpu has a problem?

is you vga fan running at a normal speed?, perhaps when you were cleaning the dust from your pc there was accidentaly some dust jamming your fan but i assume you already checked out your vga card

  29. K41N

    K41N Private E-2

how would you check fan speed and what it should be?
lately, i've been averaging 55^C for my video card.

I dont know exactly, somewhere around 55-65 i guess
