Last night after my computer installed an update to windows update and windows defender, i noticed a message appear on screen during the restart talking about an installer, i think it was a registry key.

ever since then when booting up, what once was when the screen was black for 2 seconds is now stretched for as long as 10 before vista continues booting. i system restored before this and all was fine, until it automatically updated again.

has anyone else had this problem, or noticed anything unusual?

Look up your update history and let us know what updates were installed when the problem surfaced. You could restore once again and choose to ignore/hide that installation next time round. But wait for more responses.

the only two updates in the history are windows update agent 7.2.6001.784,
and definition update for windows defender kb915597. things were a little quicker today after i defragged last night, but it is still slower than it was
