One day, one of those will be mine... :-D But, the 6.8mm round was designed to give more penetration, range, and more power to the AR platform. The NATO 5.56mm round, like my current upper, fires a 50-60 grain bullet, while the 6.8 fires a 110 grain bullet, at higher FPS. So, you have a long range tactical rifle compared to the 5.56. Especially if I can get RR to make mine with a 20" barrel...

"Remington began to develop the 6.8x43 back in 2002 and is officially introducing it this year as the 6.8mm Rem SPC. As this is written, the cartridge has not been released to the public, but I can tell you that it provides one MOA accuracy out to more than 600 meters. It has a flight path almost identical to that of the .308 Winchester, less chamber pressure than the .223 and fits into the M16 magazine envelope. Tests in 10 percent ballistic gelatin show incapacitation as good or better than the .308."

    From here: http://www.rifleshootermag.com/ammunition/remington_0303/

Of course it is not a true sniper rifle, but will be fun to shoot with. Plus, it would be a better hunting rifle than the 5.56. Modular gun systems... Awesome. You can get a .22, 40mm, 9mm, and several other caliber uppers. I love this gun! Only takes a few seconds to swap uppers and be ready to shoot.

Later on, I plan on getting the .22 upper for plinking and shooting since the bullets are so cheap. So I will have one gun, that shoots 3 calibers. A 'green' black gun, I am recycling. :-D

When I get my next bonus, I am going to have to get into reloading bullets. This hobby can get costly.

One thing I can't figure out is why the dang fore end grips for these things are so expensive... Just the fore end can run $300 or more! :confused

You sure about that? The NATO 5.56 is one of the fastest rounds out there 3100 fps.

If the 6.8 fires a 110 grain round close to the NATO round 3100 fps it would effectively have double the muzzle energy?

LOL, OK you got me there. But 110gr of 6.8 is more better than 55gr of 5.56. Extended range and damage compared to a 5.56. The .223 or 5.56 round is not a toy. It is my current home defense gun. The 6.8 is a bit more powerful, and better suited for hunting.

Hell, I don't want to get shot with a slingshot! :-D

The 5.56mm is a hopped up .22. The 6.8 is a necked down .30 cal. Either one will work for most things. Looking forward to buying a scope and shooting both long range. :-D

Plus, if I can get RR to make me an upper with a 20" barrel, it will bump up the FPS over the standard 16" 5.56 one, but not as high.

Just need about 36 days notice. Rock River says my 6.8mm upper will sip in aprox. 30 days, plus I need a couple of days to site it in, then bring it on! :-D

Of course until then, I have lil Arf, Jesus and Tack to hold down the fort. Ahh, tepee? :cool

I checked the stats out of interest
    Against the 5.56 NATO

About a third more power depending on barrel length.

Anyone else here watched every episode of future weapons multiple times?:-D

I would still bet on the 6.8mm over 100 yards. More bigger bullet. :-D

    I like the 6.8mm

    I like 7.62mm even better :) I want a HK MR762 bad.

That's what I said the 6.8 has a third more power ,at least I know for sure now you don't read my posts:-D

I like the 7.62 more too as long as your carrying the ammo BM :-D

You put too many numbers and figures in there for me to read before being properly caffeinated. :-D

I was just agreeing with you, to make sure you were reading my posts properly. Pay attention to what I mean, not what I type. :-D:-D

I'm a beefcake, I can carry tons of ammo no matter what caliber.

Check it Rikky, looks like we have ourselves an ammo caddy. :-D

Think I am set on 5.56 for now, got some 6.8 on order. BM is going to be busy. Especially when I win the Lottery and get that .50 cal sniper setup. ;)

Sure Collins, a .22 has killed a lot of people over the years. I don't want to get shot with a paintball gun or a BB gun. But I don't choose to defend my home with a slingshot either.

I want the 6.8 for better power, and, I might actually be able to hunt on some private land this year! I am not a big hunting expert, but I don't think the 5.56 would be a good choice for deer hunting. And I may be totally wrong on that. My former deer rifle is a 30-30.

For home defense, the 6.8mm has a 25 round magazine. 5.56 has a 30 round mag. If I need more than 3 or 4 shots, I am not in a happy place. ;)

I wasn't saying anything bad about guns etc. One, I was just trying to get this poor officer and his family noticed on a larger scale, and two, I was just pointing out that any sized calibre can be deadly, as if you needed to know that.

5.56 will work in a pinch for deer-sized or smaller game, but your shot placement has to be spot-on. 30-30 is a great rifle, ain't it? The 6.8 is an excellent long-range round if you haven't yet, you will enjoy it.
I personally prefer shotguns for home defense, stray bullets going through walls is not a friendly thing.

Well, my shotgun will shoot through walls also. 00 Buckshot is a vicious projectile up close. But I intend on the target absorbing most of the projectile(s) energy. :-D

Lots of different opinions on home defense methods. :cool

my personal favorite and the one that I will be employing soon is 12 gauge bean bag rounds.

deadly if used "inappropriately", less than lethal if so desired, no chance of blasting little Jimmie next door into the great beyond if I miss and hit the wall.

Only thing fearsome about that dog is it's owner. Best guard dog in the world is a tiny little yapper lap dog that doesn't bark unless there is a real issue.

"Tiny little yapper lap dogs" cannot pin you down on the ground or stop you running away, or catch you if you do run. Why do you think the police use GSDs over "tiny little yapper lap dogs"?:)

Shepherds are great dogs, and good for guarding. Fred is a great guard dog also. I can get him to sleep by the door, and if someone breaks in, they might trip over him. :-D

As far as the non leathal shells, way to expensive for me. $5 to $10 each! :eek

Damn, there's much cheaper ways to bruise someone.

If your given the rare opportunity to shoot a burglar in your property its only gonna be a once in a lifetime kinda thing so you may as well as shoot them with something interesting to see what happens, something banned by all international treaties and the Geneva convention, its only a burglar after all.

I'm sure there's plenty of guys just praying for someone to break in so they can test that weird black market ammo they bought that says 'not for use on human targets'

    :-D

LOL, Rikky, I go more for the tested normal stuff. Like the 00 Buck shotgun, or the 30 round 5.56mm, soon to be replaced by the 25 round 6.8mm.

Some tracers or incendiary ammo might be fun, but that stuff ain't cheap. :-D Lol, might catch your own house on fire with that phosphorous stuff.
