Smart Enough To Reinstall Windows, But...

... not smart enough to remember to backup my drivers.

To be fair, my computer was having a ton of issues, so I couldn't even turn it on long enough to create a backup. After system restore failed, I finally just decided to nuke it from orbit and reinstall Windows XP Home Edition from my CD. (Which was only SP 1)

The reinstall went fine, except for the part where I now have no internet. The computer seems to work fine otherwise; I have audio, and I installed the drivers for my graphics card from CD. There are a bunch of "unknown devices" under the Device Manager that just say things like PCI Device and don't give any further details. I went to the eMachines Website (I have a T6410) and downloaded all the drivers they have, but I can't seem to install anything for a network driver. I transferred Belarc over from my laptop and it told me I didn't have any network devices.

If it makes any different, I still have ALL my files from before the reinstall. (It looks like Windows kept them.) Obviously I accept that this is my own fault for being a dummy, but if anyone could walk me through any hope for my system so I can avoid having to pay someone to attempt to fix it for me, I'd really appreciate it. I'm kind of at my wit's end here. I'm not sure what additional information I need to provide.

    Hi

Is your Windows version at SP1 at present? or have you updated yet to SP2 or SP3?

Did you install all four of the drivers listed at eMachines for your model?

Install this one which is your LAN (aka network) HERE so should add networking for your internet.

I have an idea one of them (PCI device) maybe a card reader driver, do you have media card reader in your PC if so install this driver HERE

Have you rebooted yet? if not do so as many drivers will not finalise the install until rebooted.

Please run the below as written as it may tell us more info than belarc

Hi Halo, thanks for your response. I downloaded SP3 on my laptop and then transferred it to the PC; the install went fine, but there doesn't seem to be any change. Ditto after installing the two drivers you linked me to. (Assuming I did that correctly; right-click then install, right?) I downloaded all of the drivers eMachine had listed for my model and installed them, yes. I've restarted several times.

I attached my Report as you requested. Thank you for your help!

UPDATE! I seem to have fixed it. Apparently, even though the sticker on the computer says it's an eMachine, the motherboard was actually an AsusTeK. WOW but I feel stupid. I only found out after opening up the case. So I found the drivers from the Asus website and now everything seems to work. Phew!

Halo, thanks for your time. I always come to MajorGeeks to look up solutions for my computer problems because everyone here seems to know what they're talking about and always seem very helpful. This was my first point; thanks for not treating me like a moron. :)

Hey no problems, really glad you managed to fix this on your own, good stuff :)

We all have to start somewhere and I guess you have learned new things doing this, like the info in the logs and what to look for inside the PC, so a great learning experience.

Many thanks for popping back and updating us on this and glad to hear you like the forum.
