I'm not sure if this is my main problem or a result of another one. I first noticed about mid last week my computer slowing down/freezing momentarily - both in programs I use and the internet. Then on Friday I noticed icons disappearing from my desktop and I knew I had some type of virus. I can't even do a google search - says site can't be found/located.

I followed all of the steps you all recommended (great instructions by the way) and the files are attached. After running Malwarebytes, on restart it took forever to load everything, then it blue-screened, I tried one other time and same result. So I ran Combofix in safe mode, and when it completed and restarted I let it start up normally. As it was compiling/making the log I blue-screened again and it doesn't appear that the log was completed - I saw that it had deleted quite a few files as I was watching it, but they don't show up on the log.

After completing all of the steps i was able to start normally (after a couple of blue-screens). I still have the same problems, and I also discovered that physical memory is running at 40-45 percent when I have nothing opened up - other than AV and any other "normal" programs that might be running.

Any help you could give me would be very much appreciated - thanks in advance!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Goto the below link and follow the instructions for running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky
    • Be sure to attach your log from TDSSKiller
Now please also download MBRCheck to your desktop.

See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Now run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {DBC80044-A445-435b-BC74-9C25C1C588A9} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IFEvuifXpHuouiv.exe] C:\ProgramData\IFEvuifXpHuouiv.exe
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [dplaysvr] C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\dplaysvr.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
    O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [dplaysvr] C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\dplaysvr.exe (User 'Default user')

    O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Please downloadOTL by OldTimer.
    • Save it to your desktop.
    • Now shut down your protection software now (antivirus, antispyware...etc) to avoid possible conflicts.
    • Double-click OTL.exe to run. (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
    • Copy the text in the code box below and paste it into the http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/66/otlcustomfix.png text-field.
    Code:
    :Files

    "swg"=-
    :Commands
    [PURITY]
    [EMPTYTEMP]
    [EMPTYFLASH]

    [REBOOT]
    • Now click the http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/407/otlrunfix.png button.
    • If the fix needed a reboot please do it.
    • Click the OK button (upon reboot).
    • When OTL is finished, Notepad will open. Close Notepad.
    • A log file will be located at C:\_OTL\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log, where mmddyyyy_hhmmss is the date of the tool run.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: How to attach)
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the log from OTL
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thanks for the fast response! I ran each of the programs as you instructed and the log files are attached.

It is running much better now - it's not stalling/freezing up so far. There does still seem to be some strange things going on with it though: When I start IE (and sometimes when going to different URLs) I'm still getting an security alert pop-up box "You are about to leave a secure internet connection. It will be possible for others to view the information you send. Do you want to continue?"; The programs that had icons that the virus removed from the desktop aren't accessible via start-up menu - may have to reload those or something; Out of curiousity I did an Mbytes scan - it found Trojan.Agent @ C:\windows\svchost.exe - I did NOT fix/delete it - knew it would be better to see what you suggest for me to do after reviewing the logs.

Thanks again for your help & assistance.

You need to run TDSSkiller and if any of the below still appear, delete them:
    Code:
    07:04:16.0075 5020 \Device\Harddisk0\DR0\TDLFS\ph.dll - copied to quarantine
    07:04:18.0836 5020 \Device\Harddisk0\DR0\TDLFS\phx.dll - copied to quarantine

Are you saying that you cannot see some of your Start menu items or All Programs items? If yes, then try running the below.

Please download and save the below to your Desktop or anywhere else you can find it ( if the Desktop is not showing )

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

Now run it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator ). Did that help with your missing items?

Run it again now and fix this if found. This is part of your TDSS infection.

Now attach the new log from TDSSkiller also attach the new log from Malwarebytes.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I ran each of the programs and TDSS found (1) and Mbytes found (1). Attached are all of the log files.

The "unhide" program didn't help with the programs that are missing from the start menu and that are missing desktop icons. I'm not too worried about that though - I'll reinstall/reload those programs if I have to - I'm much more concerned with removing the virus(es), which it seems is close to being completed thanks to all of your help.

I'm concerned about all those items that still showed in TDSSkiller. Let's make sure they were really fixed. Reboot your PC and run TDSSkiller again and attach the new log.

I agree for sure that there's something still there - as I was working today the computer paused/froze up 3 or 4 times - much better than before, but something is still hiding somewhere.

I shut down and ran TDSS again - attached is the log....Thanks again for your help

Actually the last log is clean. So all of those items were finally removed after the C:\Windows\svchost.exe file was successfully removed. It was part of the problem .

I just wanted to take a minute to thank you and express my appreciation to you for your time, help, & expertise in helping me rid my computer of that virus (or viruses). Now I'll have some time to check out this website and see what all kinds of info may be here - I only "discovered" this site when I was attempting to rid the computer of the virus.

    Thank you very much,

    Eddie

    You're welcome.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
