Hi there! My name is Lara and I'm having huge problems trying to get rid of Smitfraud on my mom's computer.

Apparently she visited some shady Costa Rican site looking for dive information and ended up with a possessed computer. Norton was somehow uninstalled, popups are going crazy(from RegistryDefender, etc.), the computer is slower than usual, and Spybot keeps showing that we have Smitfraud-C.CoreService. Before I came on here for help it was also showing a bunch of other things including Virtumonde, which now seem to be gone.

On a side note, I don't know if I should be worried about this but.... I was sitting at my computer and all of a sudden I start to hear noise coming from my mom's computer. I turned up the speaker and it was some poker game that sounded like it was on tv. Nothing was on the screen... just sound coming from the speakers. Weird.

Anyways I ran SmitfraudFix and here is my log from that. I would really appreciate some help with this... all my parent's financial info is on this computer and they are extremely worried :( Let me know if you need anything else.... and thanks in advance for your time!

    Welcome to Majorgeeks! Lara :)

As you likely already know is that malware is a massive pest these days and does its level best to hide itself in any number of places, So just a Smitfraud log will not show all the malware that can be on your PC, the full guide of our steps below has a few other logs that show alot of the malware on your PC and where they are located, especially as financial transactions are undertaken on this PC, its best to fully rid the PC of malware nasties.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    Halo,

Thanks so much for your fast response! I tried to do all of those things... combofix worked... spybot worked... but when I got to AVG AS I had a few problems. I ran the complete scan as instructed. At the end... I hit apply all actions and some error came up saying it couldn't back up some file and that I should click "Yes" to continue anyways or "No". Clicking Yes OR No had absolutely no result and I had to exit AVG with no log :(

Sorry I can't tell you the exact name of the error... I am running AVG again on my mom's comp (I'm on my computer now). I do know there were a ton of viruses and something like 82 infections. Lovely.

    Any suggestions?

So the same thing is still happening with AVG... some of the files won't quarantine... but here are the logs from ComboFix and MGTools.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Okay now we need to use a new tool.
    • Download and save to RenV.exe from following link to Desktop (
      must be on the Desktop
      )
    • Now Copy the bold text in the below code box to notepad. Save it as Log.txt to your desktop. (It must be on your Desktop).
    Code:
    C:\WINDOWS\wdm4C .exe
    C:\WINDOWS\wdm4F .exe
    C:\WINDOWS\wdm48 .exe
    C:\WINDOWS\wdm44 .exe
    C:\WINDOWS\wdu44 .exe
    C:\WINDOWS\wdm43 .exe
    C:\WINDOWS\wdu3F .exe
    C:\WINDOWS\wdu33 .exe
    C:\WINDOWS\wdu2F .exe
    C:\WINDOWS\wdm2E .exe
    C:\WINDOWS\wdu2D .exe
    C:\WINDOWS\wdu29 .exe
    C:\WINDOWS\wdm2C .exe
    C:\WINDOWS\wdm28 .exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon .exe
    C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask .exe
    C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask .exe

    • Now using your mouse, drag Log.txt onto RenV.exe
    • When finished, RenV.exe will produce a new log names Log.txt on your Desktop I will ask for this log later.
Uninstall the below old versions of software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2 Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 202.105.182.13:80 --> unless you set this!
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {04300948-AC40-40A1-BAB3-FE60760404FA} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {925aac46-3b44-40ce-a77c-50d79bc099c3} - (no file)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: l3cups - l3cups.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: qomnmnl - qomnmnl.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    * Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:

    * Now click the 'Done' button.
    * Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    * You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger and RenV.

Be sure to tell us how things are running.

    Thanks for your response Tim!!

I did everything as instructed and here are the logs.... except for avenger. It said it couldn't find the file and when I looked at avenger.txt it was completely blank.

I am still, however, getting popups. Anything else I could try?

It said it couldn't find what file?

    Let's try again...

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs (including zone alarm as it may be blocking the fix) while we do the following:

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.

If you have a problem, use windows explorer to find and delete those files/folders.

That worked ....let us know if you have any other problems .in the meantime:

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
