    :(

    Hi

I've been hit by the Smitfraud Trojan.

To cut a long story short I've managed to get rid of the warning wallpaper

"A fatal error has occured in IE caused by Trojan-Spy.Html Smitfraud.c
System could not function in normal mode. Please check you security settings".

This was largely achieved by deleting Security i Guard (which co-incidently came up within seconds of being affected - very suspicious) and wp.bmp as well as running other anti-virus / recovery utilities.

Background is now black as I believe others have found who have also been affected

Also, I've managed to regain my desktop display tabs with the exception of the "Background" Tab.

Any ideas on the next steps ?

    Regards,

    pafc

First, please follow ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

After doing ALL of the above if you still have a problem:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Download HijackThis 1.99.1

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the ZIP file as your backups will not be safely stored.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifBefore running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifRun HijackThis and save your log file.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next post. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post as it will be removed).

    ;)

    Hi,

Thanks for all your help so far.

    I have conducted all the threads asked viz;

Trend Micro's on line, Symantec on line, Mcfee AVERT Stinger, CCleaner, Ad-Aware SE, Spybot, CWShredder, Kill2me, Buster and HSRemove.

I believe I am now clean but still have the black background screen following the Smitfraud infection and I have not got my Background Tab in Desktop Properties.

Any advice on steps from here please. I post my HJT file for your information.

    Many Thanks,

    PAFC

The first thing I notice is that your Operating System is WAY out dated. After we get your system clean I recommend your surf in to Windows Updates and get updated. You need to install Service Pack for security purposes.

Please print out these instructions so that you can operate with All Browser Windows CLOSED.

Please look in Add or Remove Programs for the following and Uninstall them if found:

    Toolbar

    WinTools

    WildTangent

Note: You will be prompted to reboot after the uninstall of WinTools. After both are uninstalled reboot into Safe Mode and procede with the rest of this fix!

Now scan with HijackThis and Check the Boxes for the following:

Make sure All Browser Windows are Closed when you Click FIX.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50245

    NOW:

    C:\wp.exe

    NEXT:
    Run CCleaner

Then, as an added precaution, Go to Start > Run and type: cleanmgr and then click OK. Make sure the boxes for these are checked:
    Temporary Files
    Temporary Internet Files
    Recycle Bin

    And Click OK.

    Reboot to Normal Windows

    FINAL STEP

Reset Web Settings & Default Security Settings:

    To Reset Web Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK

    To Default Security Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Security Tab and click Default Level for Internet, Local Intranet, Trusted Sites, and Restricted Sites.

After you do ALL of the above,
Scan with HijackThis and attach the new log.
Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now.

    Good Luck!:)

Please boot into Safe Mode with the Viewing of Hidden Files & Folders Enabled

Now scan with HijackThis and Check the Boxes for the following:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8952A998-1E7E-4716-B23D-3DBE03910972} - (no file)

    O3 - Toolbar: &Search Toolbar - {339BB23F-A864-48C0-A59F-29EA915965EC} - C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TBPS] C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPS.exe

O23 - Service: WebSeach Toolbar support NT service (TBPSSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPSSvc.exe

Make sure All Browser Windows are Closed when you Click FIX.

    NOW:
Click Start > Run > type services.msc and Click OK

Locate WebSeach Toolbar support NT service (TBPSSvc) and RightClick on it to bring up the Service Properties Window.
First: Stop the service by clicking the Stop Button.
Next: Disable it by changing the Startup Type to Disabled and click Apply

    NOW:
Navigate to and DELETE the following if they should remain:

C:\Program Files\Toolbar <-- Delete this whole folder, if you still cant delete the whole folder, go into the folder and delete each file one by one then delete the folder!

    NEXT:
    Run CCleaner

Then, as an added precaution, Go to Start > Run and type: cleanmgr and then click OK. Make sure the boxes for these are checked:
    Temporary Files
    Temporary Internet Files
    Recycle Bin

    And Click OK.

    Reboot to Normal Windows

After you complete this, surf in to Windows Updates and install Service Pack 2. Without this critical update you will continue to have these problems.

After you install SP2, Scan with HijackThis and attach the new log.
