You guys can do try this.

By completing the new http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040sm.pdf Schedule M Making Work Pay Credit form (instructions are here) http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040sm.pdf And no, you do NOT have to be a retiree to claim this credit.

This is a new credit for 2009, and almost everyone here should qualify for it, since pretty much anyone who worked during 2009 does. All you have to do is fill that form out and include it with your 1040 (enter the info on line 63) or 1040A (enter the info on line 40). That's it. You get an extra $400 (single) or $800 (married filing jointly) added directly to your return, even if you don't owe anything. I'd just thought I'd share this with everyone, because if it hadn't been for a phone call to my mom this morning I would have completely missed out on it too.

Also, just in case you didn't know, you can prepare your own taxes very easily and file them completely online for free. For your federal return, go here http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html and click on the "Choose Free File Fillable Forms" button. You can choose an electronic PIN (if you didn't have one from last year), and fill out, sign and submit the forms entirely online. All you need is the adjusted gross income number from your last year's federal taxes to verify your identity.

Also here's some additional IRS documentation you'll probably find helpful, such as the instructions for completing a 1040 or 1040A:

    http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040.pdf
    http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040a.pdf

    Just something to check out.

Silas, all of that would probably have been more helpful BEFORE the April 15 deadline. You posted it almost exactly 24 hours too late! ;)

I have the huge displeasure of doing the Co. taxes in July. I usually get some thousands of dollars back, it is still a P.I.TA. trying to get everything just right. - One of life's little drudgeries.
