So many, many viruses...

    Hello,

    Firstly--a huge thank you for this free forum, which has been helpful already. In following the directions on your "Malware Removal" post, I've already had a number of viruses found and deleted--so thank you!

    Secondly--I'm now just wondering whether my computer *really is* virus free, given that SAS found about twenty trojans, Spybot another six, Malwarebytes another few, and Combofix...well, I wasn't really sure what was going on in Combofix, but it deleted at least one file. I first noticed that something was wrong with my laptop because Symantec kept popping up saying that it had "found and removed a trojan"--but obviously it hadn't (or hadn't removed them all...), because it kept doing so. Then an explorer window kept popping up (I use firefox), so I came to the web for help--and found you!

    So, having just this minute finished the last scans, I was hoping that I could post the logs, and have someone double check that I shouldn't do anything else. As far as *I* can tell, my computer seems okay...but I just wanted to check again. I've toggled system restore.

    Thanks again!

    Byron

    Yes the scans got most of it....but there are a few things still to clean up.

    Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    o If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\MSINET.OCX
    c:\windows\system32\MSINET.oca
    c:\windows\system32\MSINET.DEP

    Folder::
    c:\windows\system32\vd2
    c:\windows\system32\tim
    c:\windows\system32\ap
    c:\windows\Lg
    c:\temp
    C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\JAMES\APPLICATION DATA\TWAIN

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now download and install:
    Java Runtime 6

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combo.

    Hello Tim,

    Thank you so much for your speedy reply! I've done everything you've asked, and am attaching the MGlogs.zip to this email. I tried to attach the combo.txt log, but the forum won't let me upload it, it says that I've already attached it to a previous post. I tried renaming it combofix2.txt, but it still said I've already attached it.

    Might combofix have saved the log somewhere else? I followed your instructions, and the file I ran through combofix.exe caused a new combofix window to open, and the progress bar filled up--but there were no further screens or instructions. Sorry to be slow!

    Thanks again!

    Did you save the text file to your desktop and drag it ontop of the combofix.exe? It should have given you a new log. The message you got indicates that you are trying to attach the same file that was originally attached.

    Let's go this way:

    download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

    Hello Tim,

    Success! At least I think so: I followed your original instructions again to check I'd not done something wrong, and sure enough, I must have done, because this time the program ran all the way through and produced a new log file (attached). I also ran MGTools again, and have attached the new log. Is there anything else I should do to clear up?

    Once again, a huge thank you--and sorry for my earlier mistake,

    Byron

    Great, Tim, thank you so much! I've followed all of the steps, and hopefully won't have to face any more annoying popups...
