My laptop has a 256GB SSD, and it's only about half full despite being the only drive in there.

 

I want a SSD drive and 64 bit OS so I can max out RAM, but my GPU is showing some artifacting every once in a while. So, looks like it is time to shop for a new GPU. :cry

If you have a desktop, so it's easy for you to have multiple drives, just get a small one as a boot drive and make your old HDD storage. a 60-64GB SSD isn't that expensive, and it makes a huge difference just to have your windows and programs on it.

Buy a 128GB hard drive and sell your current 1TB (guessing blindly, probably wrong) for more than the cost of the SSD!

I feel you, I am employed, but underemployed, so many things I want just don't happen. Sucks. I have an evil plan for the future, but many things must align for it to work... We shall see.

Yep, SSD's are the bomb, but can't defrag them. That will hurt the performance, etc.
I'm currently sitting at 115 of 238. Tried a bit of ram drive testing at the loading speeds were about the same. But, wow, having ram drives, that is where it is at. sadly, can't load the OS as a ram drive.

Change that, I have a thread on timings between ram or ssd. But, to my eye's, can't really tell the difference. I installed WoW on the ram drive, same speed as the SSD.

 

You can defrag an SSD. You will just damage it if you do (limited writes). I've never heard of it actually hurting performance though, aside from the SSD degrading due to writes over time.

I think Windows 8 disables the option. It optimizes the drives instead by running TRIM commands in place of defrag as regular maintenance.

 

7 and 8 both remove an SSD from the defrag schedule, after you refresh the Windows Experience Index.

And defragging an SSD does absolutely nothing for it, since it doesn't care where the data is. Yes, it uses up write cycles, but benchmarking uses up a lot more. That said, you can kill your SSD by defrag if you want to. You just have to do it a lot, just as with benchmarks.

To clarify, no one should take my post as an okay to defrag their SSD. It should never be done, since there's no reason for doing it and it could hurt the drive. At the same time, if a person has been doing it a couple of times due to not knowing better, that's only reason for panic if the SSD is either an older model, or a crappy one. Just stop doing it, and all will be well. Modern SSDs don't need user help, they can and will take care of everything on their own if you just let them do it.

 

60-80 in a raid? I'll have to check it myself, when I get this new toon to that level.

 

Been pricing out the rest of my build.
just need to find a case that fits with how the physical set up has to be, due to space constraints till I get my own place.
But, the build should start soon after I get the needed money, hoping to get contacted about a job too.

I have had the honour and the privilege of visiting your fine country on three separate family holidays a few years back. Being currently in University I can't make the trip again, and probably won't be able to for a few years yet.

 

And now I want to mount a GoPro or something similar on one of them to make my very own drone... :-D
