Hi back on Ma's PC again and she reminded me I'm supposed to have fixed the sound.4 Hours later still scratching the head.

To prove I read the stickys Motherboard is VIA VA-10 OP is XP home 32bit service pack 3 Audio says USB Audio device.

So when I left home I took my amp with me leaving the PC. I never had any problems with sound before I removed the Amp.

I replced my sound system with a pair of Sony Desk top speakers which work fine with my laptop and other PC and my phone.

I have tried my headphones but nothing not even an irritating start up noise.

I have updated, uninstalled and reinstalled. I have checked the volumes including the windows media player there are no mute boxes checked.

The only thing I can think of is that I had an ION turntable going htrough the PC. When I bought it I had to change all the Sound settings. So I am wondering if this is the problem. I thought I had Realtek 97 before but Speccy says no only the USB Audio Device.

As Mother is cooking me dinner I'd like to sort it out for her.

USB audio should be easy to figure out.. Is there a USB audio system plugged in? They are pretty easy to use and obvious to check for, even if un plugged. Be sure you know where all USB cables plugged in are going and remove anything that isn't required and obvious, for example the mouse, keyboard and printer for example.

Bottom line after that is you DO have a AC 97 onboard card:

    Try their driver:

    Hey Major

Award yourself a couple of Great Service Medals. Going to have one happy mother :) Next time she does sunday dinner I'll get you an invite. One thing puzzles me is that the headphone socket still doesn't work. Not important as she hates headphones just puzzles me.

    Thanks Very Much

I would check the control panel for the "newly" detected card and see if it is muted. I guess you already did that. Glad you nailed it, see you next time!
