We are discussing this amongst each other as well. As I understand it, since WhenU is now supplying a visible "alert" upon installtion, it is no longer considered spyware but rather, opt-in ware. I have my own opinions about this as do others. The way I see it, Lava-soft should have mentioned this to the public but there is still plenty of WhenU crap out there that is being installed without the current "alert". I also understand that the same programs are being installed under such conditions, hence since the new "alert" is visible it removes the status of spyware not only current versions of the spyware but for previous versions as well.

Looking at it this way, I'm sure you can see why Lava-soft took this stance albeit a poor decision overall. Spy-Bot still detects this.

That being said, there are things that SB catches that AW does not and vise versa. I would treat this situation no differently. Just that now spy-bot detects it and ad-aware does not.

Just a passing note.... Spybot also by default has 4 items checked for Ignore when downloaded, which can be altered in the settings afterwards.
I guess both lavasoft and spybot ppl are compromising slightly, and as long as people are aware of exactly what is being chosen to be ignored by one product, another can be brought in to rectify it.
The definition of what is a pest, and what isnt becomes blurred... just take AOL's aim which installs wild tangent, which seems to be part of a raging debate as to wether it is bad news or not. Invariably ppl will argue for or against it and when money is on the table these arguements can become rather heavilly weighted in favour.
I guess its a bit like mosty AV's these days.. you know they aint gonna pick out the new trojans n dialers, but they will still catch most of the nasties out there, and for the stuff which gets past your AV.. you have othe back ups. An inconvenience yes, but not a reason to kick out a product which is part of a collective armoury.

Hmm, well, as I said before, its tricky to know who you can trust. This whole shinanigan with WhenU is making me doubt my trust in lavasoft.

However, other than spybot, I don't really have another leg to stand on!

The four which spybot ignore by default at download are

    LSP New Net,
    My Search,
    New Net
    Side Step

All i'll say is i've worked spyware / malware forums for quite some time now... and spybot doesnt consider "My Search" a problem.... lol

But.. i use it cos its good at what it does. I am aware of its idiosyncracies and amend accordingly. Same as i will use Adaware. But... its always handy that places like here will keep us informed as to products limitations. Means we are aware, and can make plans accordingly. In the end, we all benifit. Sounds good to me lol!

Spybot and Adaware for me. What one misses the other one usually gets. Adaware has never been comprehensive.

I've been using the ms beta antispyware and it seems to be working quite well for me. its picked up some thats neither ad aware nor spybot could.

Ad-aware is still one of the most efficient and easy to use spyware tools out there.

bjgarrick posted this link in the software section a while ago, it is a comparison between spybot, ad-aware and the ms spyware program. It is good to know that it has limitations, and I always recommend having 2 programs, as that increases safety.

Ad-aware never finds anything on my computer though... But I don't blame Ad-aware, I think Spywareblaster and the firewall are ace!
