Any ideas on how to capture a purchased installed software download from a web site? I want to hold onto State tax programs for future tax issues. Its bad enough there is only one really good tax program out there. But they hold your feet to the fire if your system crashes for another download. They have stopped sending CD,s via mail for state taxes.

Burn it to CD once you have downloaded it.

It had to have been downloaded to your computer somewhere. If you just oepened it directly (FYI, bad idea), its probably in your temporary internet files.

    What browser did you use?

I assume you are talking about TurboTax. I too like to keep a backup of my state taxes on CD in case I need to go back later on. I guess I could download it again, but being on a dial up connection this takes forever and who knows how long Intuit will have the state verisons availble for download.

Turbotax installs the state version directly onto your computer without giving you an option to save the state version onto CD. It is great that Intuit did away with that awfull registration program they had a couple of years ago, but I still do want to have a CD copy of the state tax program I paid for.

This is what I tried this morning and it appears it works. I started the download of the state version. After downloading it asks if you want to install. At that time I closed TT without installing the state version. I went in to explorer and did a search for the most recent files changed on my hard drive and found 5 files in my turbo tax directory (2 CAB's, 1 INI's, 1 HDR). I copied these files to CD for future reference, including of where they were located. The next time I started up TT and installed the state tax upgrade section, it used the files that were already on the hard drive and did not start a download all over again. This seems to work.

Is this getting something for free, instead of paying for it? I don't think so. Everyone who pays for TT (like I do every year) also gets a copy of the state program, it is not an upgrade to be paid for separately as far as I know. Pls correct me if I am wrong.
