Software Crossover?

I need (what seems like) a very specific piece of software. If anyone else here is into speaker design and DIY you know that drivers need crossovers appropriate to each driver's purpose (woofer, tweeter, bandpass/mids). I was thinking that since most current desktops have at least a 5.1 surround output (usually 7.1), there would be a software crossover available instead of having to build hardware crossovers. I'm looking for something more specific than just real time EQ adjustment, I want a real time program that allows me to edit what Hz range is being output to which speaker output on the back of my desktop.

    Can anyone help?

If your signal out put from your computer is 5.1 it should be going to your 5.1 speakers. To "adjust" how that is done will be dependent on the software you are using. Some let you adjust, effects or how loud the surround speakers are vs the center speaker etc. however, keep in mind, it's also dependent on the original track. Some movies have better 5.1 than others. A good rule of thumb is to play a modern movie then play an older dvd. I try to go for balance. Some don't send the voices to the center channel as well as others. Sometimes even on "modern" movies. spdif out or digital out usually goes to a reciever that can "read" the signal. So, if you have a 5.1 track and it outputs through your spdif to a reciever this takes the load off yer cpu and computer in general. Adjust there. Hope i helped and explained it ok. If not, it's cos' I didn't have enough coffee :)

I don't think you get at all what I am asking for here. I want a program that intercepts the audio feed to the speakers and filters out Hz ranges that I can specify. Say I want my subwoofer only to play audio in the Hz range of 25Hz-100Hz. Instead of building a complicated and expensive crossover to achieve this, I could just control it via software.

Unless you have a basic grasp on crossovers, how they work, and why they are needed you might not get what I am trying to convey.

I just have onboard sound, so I don't think that the kxdriver driver would work. Also, true rta looks like more of a sound generator than a sound filter.

I worked with Steinberg's Nuendo 5.1 that let me edit like you said. It's around 2 grand.

I can think of much better things to spend 2 grand on.

Seriously, no one has developed this kind of software? I would, but I don't have any kind of programming skills. Although it is kind of specialized, I seriously don't think it would be that hard to make...

Yeah, it's expensive. I ran mine through an RME HDSP 9652 Hammerfall card, Mesa Boogie Triaxis with Simul Class 2:90, TC Electronic GForce, two mixers, a 5.1 surround system that was reference monitors for mastering and built two DAWs for this. I got pics of everything here: http://www.bbzshop.com/BBzblog/4Cs/ My guess is the reason the software is not out there for folks with "sound on their board" is because Dolby Digital wants to limit the access to their software/hardware to major studios. Anytime you make or create something 5.1 or want to "edit" like you mentioned they want to make sure it's up to par. Even with the investment I had into my small studio it was still hard to do that without help from them. Think of it as "exclusive." Good luck and merry x mas. I got tired of trying myself.
