Hi, I was directed here to obtain info on software that actually works to mask a PC's I.P. address and surf anonamously. I did a Google search and there are lots of softwares that claim to do this. However, some of them don't even guaranty that what they're selling will work! Some nonscence about 3rd parties providing the "tunnels/servers".

There is way too much "Big Brother", ID theft, and I have no desire to be monitored @ every site I go to. Can somebody help me out?

I just want to surf the web without anyone knowing my IP address & who I am. The other reasons are common sense as the web & softwares continually are changing. Unfortunately, there is way too much "Big Brother".

    Thanks for your help. :confused

I care. If you know what I'm seeking please elaborate. As I get older I am becoming much more private about everything. If you don't care that's fine, but I posed a question and just need answers. Thank.

Proxys are good for alot of things.
Hiding from the cops when you know what your doing will land you in jail for quite some time.
And for proper use such as hiding youre identity online.
    I heard tor (vindalia)was good.
I used it for a week and it gave me no problems.

But however do please be aware that the government has setup many proxy's for there use and to catch people doing illeagel activities or monitor what there doing.
Most of them do have a tosa (Terms Of Service Agreement) Stating that if you use the proxy given that your computer will be part of the Federal Computer System and they can investigate any files they want or use your computer for there use.
    So i would be careful.
I have always thought it to be more dangerous to use a proxy than to use my own ip.

I am aware of what you said above. Now I will need specific software that will provide what I want with encryption tunnels. Do you know of any of these that work and are reputable/ Thank you.:)

I believe in security and personal privacy as much as anyone, but this seems,to me, to be taking paranoia to an extreme level.

People make money off of it.
Usually the media stirs it up a bit.
However the government does take alot of information from you believe it or not.

For what it is worth - I found this software- ProxyMall.
    http://www.cloakanon.com/
If link is not allowed-sorry .
    {Please delete moderator .}
You can just search for ProxyMall.
That is not a affiliate link.
It is their home sales page.
It looks like it does at least work.
    Most of the time.
As the site explains it is constantly updating with proxies due to proxies going bad.
It is way cheaper than anything else I could find after searching for several days.
    About $10.bucks.
    You buy the software-updates are free including proxies. {About 5000 Listed}
    Please Note-
Caution - Warning- This does not protect you from malaware, etc.
As already stated above by DomLuc.
These are a bunch of browser type proxies -you click on one- and surf the web through their browser- not yours.
This hides you and your IP address from any site you go to.
But- some of these proxies are-bad news- so use caution.
They can have malicious software waiting to grab your pc.
Just like a million other websites nowadays.
It happened to me one time so far.
And I had the never ending joy of spending most of the day cleaning my pc of all the trash it loaded on me.
Lucky for me it was not too serious-mostly adware.
If in doubt about one of them- check the url by searching on it-before using it.
you can find out a lot by what other people are saying about it.
And it goes without saying-keep all your pc protection turned on at
all times - and clear your cookies-before starting to surf.
    And after you finish.
They have a video on their site that explains it better than I can.
At least they did when I was there last.
    Hope that helps.

I'm NOT paranoid. The enemy is real. If you believe/trust the Govt. or anyone else in authority you're taking a big risk. I trust nobody anymore as we've been lied to by every administration for over 45 yrs. The Govt. has no intentions of keeping the internet private for citizens.

65% have no protection? Not smart.

I have Explorer 8, but am not familier with the private browser and how it will work to meet my requirements.

I hardly use e mail. My concern lies with going to sites and being 100% sure that nobody is monitoring my internet usage.

I have been re-doing my O.S. weekly or so to clean the hard drive.

I have asked many techs where does data/files go when you delete them from a hard drive or a flash drive- I never have gotten an answer that is the same from 2 or more people. Do you know where deleted files go when you delete them from a hard drive or a flash drive?

I do know that deleted files are not really deleted off of a hard drive unless you re-format the drive and wipe it. Problem is it's not what I want to do frequently.

Question: Where does data go when you perform a system restore? Thanks.

I'm not concerned with the sites I go to. I would think a request for software that works to mask an I.P. address is not that unusual these days. The very least one should expect is for a product that costs you $$$ should work. Why would anyone NOT guaranty a product if they're taking your money?

I appreciate your opinion on this matter.

(just getting back to the original post LOL )

You can also set up a 2nd browser to go through a proxy. For example: lets say you do most of surfing with Internet Explorer. You could install Firefox, then set it up to go through a free proxy server. Because surfing through a proxy can slow down your connection (sometimes dramatically), you'd still do the majority of your surfing as usual, through Internet Explorer. You'd use Firefox (in this example) for the times when you'd want to be more anonymous online. There are tons of free proxy sites out there, just Google it. Do the same for learning how to configure the browser of your choice to use the proxy. In the past, I had Opera set up for proxy surfing, but I found that surfing via a proxy to be too slow, but then again I'm an impatient person. In any case, I think using the software I just linked to above is great. It's free, fast, and will keep you anonymous.

And there is no, I repeat NO, software that is 100% infallible.
Just when they think they have it, somebody else finds a way around it.
There are people who does absolutely nothing but try to work around different types of programs. Firewalls, AntiVirus, AntiSpyware, and even snooping through the different ports on your computers trying to find backdoors.

The 'deleted' files go nowhere, only the names of the files are changed so they are no longer 'visible' to the operating system. I've recovered jpegs from one flash drive that would have filled the drive almost 4 times ... yes, each file was different and survived formatting in the camera between 1 and 4 times (and survived the error which made the drive invisible to the OS).
Clearing partitions, re-formatting, etc. does not clear the information from the drive, I've recovered full data from formatted hard drives in minutes - the drive needs to be overwritten with zeroes (or random characters?) at least 9 times, maybe many more, before it could be considered clean.

The ISP knows where you go and when. There is no way to avoid this unless you have no paid ISP and use only free hotspots. I'm not sure what the hotspots do as far as keeping accounts. Your computer has a MAC address (the wifi hardware) and that can be used to identify a computer.

You know how the post office has to know your address so it can deliver your mail to you? Well, your ISP has to know your address so it can deliver web pages to you. You can go through all the proxies you want but someone knows where you are so you get served the proper web pages.

How can I do this? I presume you're also referencing a USB flash drive as well.

Thanks. Yeah, I read all that BS about how big brother can walk all over your rights if they even think you are a bad guy.

What I don't understand is why people think you're doing something wrong just because you want everyone to keep out of your PC. It seems that the Govt. has nothing better to do than to spy on good citizens.

So, why are we paying them 6 figure + salaries???

I was told by techs that if a drive is re-formatted all data is lost. It seems that deleting files is almost ridiculous to do. Why is this?

What utility does the 9X write over?

While I agree for the most part, keep in mind that the internet is just one area. Most identity theft, credit card loss is not lost on the internet, but many other places. Often time you will find credit card info is stolen from a bank physically. The internet requires you to use the same common sense you would in the real world. The places you shop track your habits as well.

    The internet

If you delete something, it can often be recovered, whole or in part. If you write over the sector it was deleted from, it can not be recovered. So, to be sure sensitive data is erased, many programs write so called "zeros" to the drive to be sure it is unrecoverable. Unless you got something illegal, nude or top secret, this is typically overkill. Again, many of the things people do being paranoid about identy theft or whatever typically ignore the obvious at the same time. Most of this is a waste of time and I have been on the net since it was DOS.

P.S Show me the person who had their information "stolen" on the internet and I will show you someone using their dogs name for their password or something silly like that. Does it happen to innocent, careful, people? Sure. But, often times an explanation can be found. A simple one. Be careful, be cautious, slow down, you will be ok.

I d-loaded the program and it's running now. I must have missed it in that post. I was looking @ the settings, but didn't see an option for wiping free space. Where would that be? Thanks for your help!:p

    Walker,
I'm also interested in finding a program for anonymous surfing. Not to do anything illegal, I have specific reason.
I've found a couple of programs, one has a free trial called Anonymizer. The reviewers rate it 8 out of 10. The other is Ghost Surf, which I wasn't exactly raving about. Anonymizer costs $29.95, which I will probably purchase.
    Hope that helps :)
