Software to play DVD on my computer

My computer is a bit out of date right now, so I don't have a DVD player. I'm saving my DVDs on an external hard drive through my husband's computer to watch on my computer. I used the Power DVD trial offer but don't want to purchase it. Could you please recommend a freeware program comparable to Power DVD that I could use.

There are a lot of good players out there that could compare to power dvd the main thing is getting the codec to play certain movies/files.
