Thanks for the reply Daymond. it's probably a bit deeper than I was hoping for. I found undelete plus through this web site and it got all of the recent stuff back. Files that had already been overwritten were not restored though. Not the end of the world I guess.

    hi ajs!

My favorite is Easy Recovery by Ontrack, but quite expensive. There's a whole list of data recovery software on the main page of MG

The freeware marked "hot" at the moment is Undelete Plus. Haven't used it, so I can't tell you haow it is, but the blurb says:

Undelete Plus is a quick and effective way to retrieve accidentally deleted files, files removed from the Recycle Bin, in a DOS window, from a network drive, from Windows Explorer with the SHIFT key held down.

Undelete Plus works under Win 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP/2003 operating systems. The program supports all Windows file systems for hard and floppy drives including FAT12/16/32,NTFS/NTFS5 and image recovery from CompactFlash, SmartMedia, MultiMedia and Secure Digital cards.

    Good luck!

I've successfully used 'Restoration' many times to recover stuff from an emptied recycle bin. You can scan for individual files by name, or just scan for all deleted files, and recover what you need. I accidentally deleted 7 CD's worth of music, and Restoration allowed me to get about 85% of the music back. If the hard drive has been over-written where the data was stored, you won't be able to recover the data in its entirety- the data will be corrupt. But if you haven't used the PC much since emptying the bin, you should be able to successfully recover most of the data you need. Be sure to save the recovered data on an external drive or a flash drive or a floppy disk or a different partition if possible. There's a chance that when you recover the first few files they'll over-write any files that haven't been recovered yet, therefore corrupting those files (was that confusing enough? ;) ). This post has become far too long and wordy :zzz
SO- here's the link to Restoration: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Restoration_d4474.html
There's a bunch more free utilities in the Data Recovery section here at MajorGeeks if Restoration doesn't do it for you (I also recommend Avira's UnErase).
