Software to schedule Internet downloads

I would like to find software that will allow me to schedule downloads of large files from midnight to 3am and then shut down my computer if possible. I'm not even sure what to google to find any such software if available. Can anyone point me in a direction?

My server limits my downloads to about 200 mb per day, but I can download unlimited mb from midnight to 3am. I have set the clock to get up at midnight to do this for large files, but hope there is a program that doesn't need beauty sleep the way I do.

Wow! Thanks Steve and dlb! You gave me a lot to look at. I will go through them and when I figure out what will be best, I'll post back here again. I'm amused that I might have something to contribute here—I know just enough about computers to be a danger to myself.

Thanks for the welcome too, dlb. This is my first stop when I have a computer problem, so I have lurked here for ages. My questions have always been answered by reading messages, so never had to post. This time, I didn't know where to even start.
