Anyone else suffer from software addiction?
I go to freeware sites and download tools, ect.. going back through pages and pages, like "oh, that sounds cool.." Then I wind up up a folder full of files that I have no idea what they do??
I'll never have enough time to test all these cool things I download, because I am too busy downloading more.
Anyone else share in my pain?
If no one has a cure, how about a program to organize all these downloads? Maybe something that I can annotate what the program does?

    I can't stop!!!

I feel you there. I have a folder on my main computer called 'junk'. That is where I install the free programs. If I get bored, I look around in it. All kinds of neat stuff I had forgoten about. :-D

LOL, I've a gigs worth of those dating back from 2002. I'm going through them all now, if I don't remember what it is then I don't need it and off it goes to digital heaven. I have my freebies organized much like the main page is here.

    Typical packrat mentality wolfie! Guilty.:eek::-D

I just bought a 640GB drive and I was looking through what I could put on there and there was all the junk I've collected. There's no way I'm keeping all this stuff. BTW, the 640 brings me into the over one TB of space category. I never imagined I would ever need that kind of real estate.

*looks at download folder* think I'm busted too. Not enough time lately to play with it all and yes I do forget what is was I downloaded so now remember to rename them. Need more hours in the day! If I could just give up my day job I would have enough time maybe....

Work does get in the way.
.. tell me about it.. I had a harddrive die and was sick over it. You know there is no longer a need for a 'delete' key with terabyte drives.

I have to confess to having a couple folders full of stuff too, most of which I shall no doubt never use, but im no download junkie and I do try and be sensible about things...new software = new problems and although it's nice to experiment I tend not and if I do download new software it has to be something essential else I just don't bother. On the other hand...it wouldn't hurt to experiment some..I just like to keep things as simple as possible LOL
Always have VM for trying out apps too

Er... you do know where you posted this, right? MajorGeeks. The easily best ever website of software downloads...!

All of us members became members because of that addiction you mentioned. We may or may not admit it, but why else would we be here? :major

When a tech IT came to install a new HD he was NOT impressed with the amount of all the freebies I had downloaded from MG. Said it slowed down my 'puter. He did a fresh install and turned on the Windows FW, said it was a good FW!!

As soon he was gone, I reinstalled all the freebies again and yes, I'm addicted and love it. Sofar, it hasn't slowed down my 'puter (yet). :major

PS: am a senior in age.....

A D/L junkie - Yup. One of the originals, LoL. Do I delete downloads? Yeah, but not until they're all burnt to DVD first. I just categorize my month and year, then I can delete and be safe in the "You just never know" category. ;) ...Mind you, I do have a lot of DVD's with just the date and something like 'Stuff' written on them. I'll check them out one day - riiight!rolleyes

I think i'm the opposite... mainly because I'm completely aware that this is how viral and adware take over...

But sometimes... I see a legitimate program I really like... and I go "find" it... *bites lip* but I get bored easy and delete it like the day after.

The other thing with 'archiving' all this freeware is sometimes it goes shareware & you still have the free version.. like Mailwasher, FSCapture, jv power tools, Reaper, PowerArchiver, and the list goes on.

Me too, foogoo :-D If you are using XP (not Vista) you can add Comments to nearly every file you download. Comments will remind you of what the program is for, or why you downloaded it. I use it for (nearly) every file I download.

First you must add the Comments heading.

Right click your Downloads Folder heading, beside Name (see thumbnail). A list of headings will popup for your selection. Tick (check) Comments. This will add Comments to your Headings. You will have to save this layout so it applies to all Folders.

    Next:
One you have done this, right click against any / most Files and another popup box will appear. Left click on Properties (usually the last one). Another popup box. :-D Left click on Summary tab. Left click on bottom white box heading of Comments and cursor will move to there. Type in anything you need to remind you why you downloaded the program. See second thumbnail for an example of my Comments for UBCD4WIN that I downloaded this morning.

All thiis takes more time to explain than to do it once you get used to it :major

Hope this is clear, if not come back to me.
Check out the thumbnails again for assistance.
    Once again, NOT for VISTA.
    Hope this helps. Bazza

    PS: I use Clipdiary 1.4 from http://www.majorgeeks.com/Clipdiary_d5344.html
It saves a lot of typing for me, as I usually have copied some info from the Download link, so I can paste it into Comments later. Baz
