hi . iv just got a comp again after about 3 years without one . its got a duron 1200 chip,10 gig hd and 128 ram so it aint that fast but it does the job.iv installed ccleaner,pc tools av,pc tools spyware doctor and sygate firewall.will these protect me sufficiently or is there anything else i should have ? also since putting the av and spyware things on my boot time has slowed down considerably.do i just have to put up with this because of my lack of ram or is there something i could do.cheers kwisatzrolleyes

You should be ok with what you have. But keep in mind...if you don't play it safe then no amount of protection software will protect your computer. Being that you've been away from the internet scene for a while...you might want to read this thread!!

Is it Windows XP? Being that you don't have very much memory at all, it is going to boot and run VERY slow. Windows XP really needs a BARE MINUMUM of 256mb of memory and that still isn't really sufficient!!

Thanks v.much Rogvalcox .. yes im running xp and it is a bit slow but nothing major apart from the boot up time.My friend has a spare stick of 128 ram he is going to install for me soon so that should take me to the 256 bare min and speed stuff up a bit .. guess i will have to live with the boot up time for now (gives me chance to make a coffee) .. thanks for the thread i will give it some perusal after iv typed this .. One other thing my sygate firewall sometimes pops up messages saying either the pc tools av or spyware guard have changed since the last time i used them and are trying to contact the internet .. Im presuming this is them just trying to update and the f/wall being overzealous or could i be wrong ? many thanks kwisatzrolleyes

Whenever your AV or Spyware apps update, which most do automatically, almost every day if not. Whenever they update there are changes to the files obviously and that is most likely what is triggering that notice in your firewall. However...if you know for a fact the particular program hasn't updated since the last notice...then you might want to be wary of malware.

    Good luck and safe surfing.

    Congratulations on getting a computer!
    I'd also install SpywareBlaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
it won't slow your computer down; it just protects it from some items even getting on to your computer so there is less to cleanup.
It is free and gets updated about every 2-3 weeks so check for updates about every 3 weeks and you should be good.
