Some "Post-Tweak" Blues ...

Been having some server "timeout" issues after some tweaking of services via > http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm.

I pretty much went by the "Safe" column here, except for things that I knew I wasn't using, such as Smart Card and 'Mobile Service' (Bluetooth?) stuff - things like that.

But something "seems" to have effected my internet connection, were as I have to occasionally reload pages after waiting for them to appear (in Firefox 3.0.10), and them being dropped. I never recall having to do this before, and wondering if perhaps someone knows off the top of their head which service might be affecting this, without having to go through the entire list again?

    Thanks in advance ...

    Hi Glenn

Does this happen in all user accounts?

    Does same happen in IE?

While your having mutliple issues on this PC, its really best not to touch services, unless you know exactly what each one does and what the dependancies for each service is on your PC, as no two PC setups are the same and these tweaks are just guidelines, not must do things.

Sadly you will need to go through the whole list again and hope you wrote down the ones you changed and what too? or reset to the default setting for your version of Vista and see if things resolve themselves.

Some that are off top of head are BITS, Base filtering Engine, CNG Key Isolation, Function Discovery Resource Publication, Network Connections, Network List Service, Network Store Interface Service, Remote Proceedure Call (RPC), Server etc

Not a lecture point Glenn but if doing service tweaking then its always best to do one at a time, this helps you know if one of the tweaks breaks something or you've disabled one by accident (did that mysefl with XP when it first was released, killed the OS as it wouldnt boot), but also look at the dependancies and see if disabling one service may affect one you actually need, to be honest though, I dont even bother these days tweaking service, well maybe just 5 of them I know I definatly dont need for my system.

So to recap, set all the services back to their default setting for your Vista version from that guide, and finish off your malware thread before attempting something new, need in reality to get your PC back to a good working point as you have iirc many issues at present, concentrate on one and reslove that, like make sure your PC has no malware issues, then if setting the services back to default status doesnt work then continue with this network thread and resolve this, then jump to your posts on the printer issue and resolve that, but keep a specific main issue in its own thread, makes it really easy for us to follow whats be suggested tried and failed/worked.

Hi David & thanks. I "believe" it does, though I've been trying to stick to just one UA recently.

Not sure, as I don't use IE (currently).

Understood, however it was exactly due to having those very "multiple issues" that I decided I needed to try do "something". I did spend many hours reading about each of the services, AND each ones dependencies (Black-Viper's site is pretty thorough, and exhaustive!)

Much as yourself, and after much reading, I only disabled what I was sure that I did not use. Anything "questionable" was put into manual mode, though I understand that-that too, may/can pose problems, and I will be TRIPLE and QUADRUPLE checking against those again ...

Well, not a huge problem ... I can do that, if nothing else, I suppose it helps keep me off the streets!

Thank you for this ... this is exactly what I was looking for. I can "start" with these, and see if I am "off" in my rendering.

Even if it was a lecture, I wouldn't mind being lectured by you, as you are always kind in your replies - :)

My "service tweaking" was originally done well before the issues started to appear. I have not touched them since starting the current Malware thread - and would not do so while someone was actively helping me here. I have to admit though that yesterday I was jumping-around quite a bit due to down-time whilst awaiting replies - and just feeling sheer frustration, angst - "wrecked nerves" - and mostly just trying to "keep my head in the game". I tend to completely lose my track with this tech stuff if I walk away from it for any period of time - even if I write things down, it just seems that I lose my place or train-of-thought with it - but then those are personal issues that I suppose no one wishes to hear about ...

When I can afford it (should be soon!), I will upgrade my RAM as much as possible (I "think" I can go to 4GB?), and perhaps even a faster CPU? But definitely the FULL bit of RAM. Hopefully that will address at least "some" of my issues here with this PC?

Thank you again David very much, and Happy Tech-ing!
