Look thru the Drive Cleaners section here at MajorGeeks and you'll find plenty of programs that will clean duplicates... just be careful!!! I tried a using a duplicate cleaner some time ago, and it found many duplicate files that were Windows system files (and many that weren't also) so I just left it alone. I suppose if you find one that will allow for custom scans, then you could check for dups in just My Documents or My Music or whatever. The Prefetch folder: yes, it can be cleaned. Cleaning it on a regular basis, however, may actually slow down your PC's access time to certain programs. The prefetch folder is a kind of 'rolodex' for windows where info about commonly used apps and programs is stored and retrieved when needed, allowing for some programs to be opened quicker. I use ATF Cleaner daily, but only clean the prefetch every 10 days or 2 weeks or so just to keep it from getting too large. As for cleaning stuff in your Windows folder: again, BE CAREFUL!!! If not 100% sure of what you're cleaning, you can REALLY screw things up!! To be safe, rename the file(s) you want to delete before actually removing them; reboot, and run the PC for some time and see if it runs OK- if so, then the file is safe to remove (probably). Alternatively, you can put files in the Recycle Bin, reboot, and use the PC as usual and see if everything is OK- if so, empty the Bin... if not, just restore the files in the Bin to the original location(s). Your best bet for removing software you don't use anymore is to go thru Add/Remove Programs or to use the program's built-in uninstaller if it has one.... good luck, and careful cleaning! ;)
