    Hi All

my apologies if this has already been covered but i'm getting desperate now.

I'm a numpty when it comes to computers, i've got all sorts of anti spyware stuff running including adaware se, spywareblaster and spyware doctor.

I've also got grisoft running BUT

I worked away for a couple of weeks and forgot to set them to auot update, the wife used the system and now whenever i try to download anything or run an on-line scan i get the same message every time.

    " HTTP Error 403 - Forbidden
    Internet Explorer "

it doesn't matter what i'm trying to download it just won't have it.

Please help me cos i can't afford to have another machine fail at its first flying attempt ;)

I'm off to work now and should be back at 7am (GMT) so i'll check back then, thank you all in advance.

    " HTTP Error 403 - Forbidden
Internet Explorer " this looks like Internet Explorer is having a problem... did u try reinstalling it? also. do u get this error when u try to update avg or adaware? if not, do it and run them. u might also have a download accelerator running, if this is the case uninstall it and see if the problem persists

are there any significant changes you have done to ur system lately?

I would try something a bit less drastic first, open IE, Tools menu, Internet options tab, click the "Reset Web Settings" button, goto the advanced tab and click "Restore Defaults". Then go to the security tab and click the "Default level" button, and test it out. if that works, be sure go update your spyware blaster program and have it protect your IE. :D

    Hi both

Thanks for your replies, i've tried what oldman suggested to no avail, i did have the newer version of spyware blaster but like an idiot i deleted it and thought i'd be able to DL it again totally forgot i can't DL anything at the moment.

As for adaware, spyware doctor & girsoft yes i have been able to update it all and done full scans after every update but i guess i'm still not doing something right?

Olley, if i uninstall IE how do i keep my favorites? is there a way to back them up/ save them somewhere so the don't get deleted?

Sorry for being such a pain but like i said i'm a total numpty.

Oh nearly forgot, when i had problem before my friend Newt who directed me to this site to DL spyware blaster also suggested i DL hijack this, i've still got that on my system if running it and putting the log on for you to see will do any good?

    Thanks in advance again.

    Olley Sergeant

yes, there is a way of keeping them...
    go to C:\Documents and Settings\"URUSERNAME"\Favorites

if u take this folder and make a copy of it to the desktop, then reinstall IE6, and then replace the new Favorites folder with the one u copied to the desktop... this should save ur favorites

Ok done all that and i'm now back to IE 5.5 (only copy i had), the same thing is still happening :(

    God i hate computers !!

Unfortunetly i brought this system second hand and it had windows ME and IE6 already on it so i don't have the discs for it.

I guess my options are begining to run out now, sorry to be such a pain in the butt.

    Hi Trogg;

From what I've read, this error usually seems to have something to do with permissions on your computer if you get it no matter where you're trying to download from. One item I read indicated that Zone Alarm (or presumably any firewall) was causing trouble, and another turned out that the user profile had been changed to not authourize downloads. So, you may want to look into your firewall settings. I found this article from microsoft pertaining to people getting the error when trying to download from windows update http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;EN-US;Q245142 hopefully one of the fixes in there will work. If you're able, you may want to try downloading firefox on another computer, burn it onto a cd and seeing if it will allow downloads. Good Luck!

Well thats it, i've done everything i can now, followed all the help you guys have given me and it is much appreciated believe me BUT i can't even go on the microsoft pages now, everytime i try it tells me IE has caused some problem or another and needs to close then it asks if i want to send a report :(

Had enough now computers going through the window tomorrow afternoon cos i'm to tired to unplug it and do it tonight.

See if you can do the below some how (even if you have to download it to another PC and copy it to the infected one via floppy or CD):

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

We really need to see a log from HJT 1.99.1

    Is this next line valid?
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.maggotdrowning.com/forum/default.asp

You can have HijackThis fix the below lines (note: nothing belongs in the Trusted Zone, not even majorgeeks)
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = ;<local>
    O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

    Hi Chaslang

Sorry about the major delay in posting but as i said i've been waiting for my friend to DL the latest HJT program for me.

With all the help you give to people on these forums i'm not expecting you to remember me so i'll refesh your memory as to my problem.

Every time i try to DL something i get a 403 error which stops me downloading.

Please find attached the log file from the first scan i've done using hjt 1.99.01 version

Thanks in advance for your help.

I merged you back to your old thread to keep everything in one place. It is always best to stay in one thread no matter how long it takes to fix a particular problem.

I'm looking at the log now.

    Re: F.A.O Chaslang

Earlier I asked if the below was valid. You did not answer:

You never fixed the below either:

    O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

They are not the cause of your problem though. I would try a temporary disable of your ZoneAlarm firewall and see if you can download. Let me know.

But just incase the firewall is not the problem, here is something for you to read so you can understand what 403 errors are about:

    Hi Chaslang

I did answear the question about the maggotdrowning bit, its my homepage because its the fishing website i moderate on.

I can't understand why the other two things have come back??
I wrote down what you had said to fix then checked and double checked them before clicking the "fix" box??

I'll try turning of zonealarm again and see if it does any good, thanks again.

    Hi Chaslang

I guess i didn't do something right when i tried to "fix" the 09 things last time because i've done it this time and its worked??

instead of just shutting down zonealarm i removed it using the add/remove program and then went tio the download page and re-installed it.....yes thats right i downloaded it :) , i can't understand this but when i shut it down before i still couldn't download, when i removed it and re-installed it everythings working fine i've just managed to download the up-to-date version of spyware blaster from majorgeeks.

Thanks for your help it really is much appreciated.
