Hello, My computer has really slowed down over the last few months and become almost unusable in the last two weeks. It seemed to coincide with loading and running Adobe Flash, but that in itself shouldn’t slow it down this much. I think I must have some sort of infection. I am running Windows XP –Service Pack 2. I ran through all of the XP cleaning procedures and it does seem to have improved, but still not performing like it should. I have attached the logs below. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to fix it. Thanks.

Your problem is not due to malware. It is due to an inadequate amount of RAM. You have:

    Total Physical Memory: 256.00 MB
    Available Physical Memory: 45.64 MB

256MB is not enough memory to properly run Windows XP and all the applications you have installed. And having only 45.64 MB free is a big problem. You need to really add 4 times this amount of RAM.

As software gets updated over periods of time, the resources required to run the same software (even Windows itself) can change and thus you can see degradation in PC performance due to this.

So the proper fix is more memory. I will give some things to do below that may give some slight improvement.

    • First uninstall ALL toolbars like Google, Yahoo, Snagit.
    • Now uninstall Ad-Aware which is not very effective anyway and it is running a service and wasting system resources. You are much better off having SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes for scanners than having Ad-Aware.
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Component Manager] "C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe"

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now go thru each of the below and figure out why you need these to load at startup. I would not have any of them. I would only run them when I use them. But that's me. Your requirements/needs will be different.

    O4 - Startup: Jungle Disk Workgroup.lnk = C:\Program Files\JungleDiskWorkgroup\junglediskworkgroup.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: HP Digital Imaging Monitor.lnk = C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: HP Image Zone Fast Start.lnk = C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqthb08.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: PlcmGobiAPI.exe.lnk = ?
    O4 - Global Startup: Polycom Communicator.lnk = C:\Program Files\Polycom\Communicator_for_skype\Application\Polycom_Communicator.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: SnagIt 8.lnk = C:\Program Files\TechSmith\SnagIt 8\SnagIt32.exe

One more question... All those HP programs that I have - are all of those necessary to run my printer/scanner or can some be removed? They seem to be serious space hogs.

That is why I said you need to figure out what you need and don't need. I cannot decide for you what features you like to use. You probably don't need very many of them (if any at all) just to print.
